Hey Folks Finally Getting the bugs out of the MD, But the tractor is REAL hard to start on gas. It sounds like it wants to start, I let go of the button, it farts sputters and usually quits. SOMETIMES it will fart and sputter for 30 seconds after i release the starter, then just dies, the odd time after sputtering, it will just fire to life. once it does finally stay running it runs beautiful, and switches to diesel quite nicely. The other oddity is that, she switches back to gas NO PROBLEM AT ALL no sputter no hesitation, the only problem is starting on gas, also when starting on gas THERE IS ALOT OF GRAYISH SMOKE untill it starts then goes away when it FINALLY starts. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Matt

Have you timed the engine ? sounds like it may need timing. Use the pointer on the left side by the front pulley & there is a mark on the pulley to allign with the pointer. Makes a world of difference in starting.

Matt, I recently Bought a MD that started the same as yours but only the first start of the day after warm-up it would start great every time. What I found out was it was a combination of small things. Old gas, linkage adjustments, lubrication of all moving parts, Carb. adjustment, ect. I don't know how much your tractor has been run ( Mine had only been started once or twice a year for the last 10 years or so)Since I have been playing with mine once a week or so it is starting better every time.Aren't those MD's neat to play with? I love it when you pull back that lever and it starts to blow those big black smoke rings!

I would check the butterfly valves in the intake manifold for complete closure when on gasoline position. If they are hanging any, it will ruin the fuel air ratio and give those symptoms. Lube the pivot points on all external Gas/diesel linkage on both sides of the block/head (I like tri-flow spray because it lasts in those linkages)

If you have a shop manual, read and familiarize yourself with the linkage for changeover from gas to diesel. My experience is that the various parts of the linkage that perform different tasks can be out of adjustment and affecting start up. In the manifold there are butterflies and a switch and a lever to hold the float closed and another to open the valves. Thats just the gas side, all these things have stop adjustments and springs and tolerences. A manual is a must.
