Plowed for the 1st time in my life yesterday. I have a lot to learn. Thanks to Huge and Bob M for giving me some very helpful tips.On my first few rows I was leaving a strip of sod and it was pulling so hard it killed the motor a few times. I figured out that my rt rear tire needed to be slid in all the way to the axel. I didn't want to take time to do this so I scooted over about 6 inchs in the furrow and man what a difference it made. Pulled much easier. And yes Allen that sod is hard to bust up. This was the best grass on my place. I was in 1st gear wide open just to keep it rolling. Tried 2nd but it just couldn't do it. I'm sure it would have turned the sod over better if I could have had a little more ground speed. But it was all the little Super C wanted. There is a low place that runs across my ground also and that gave me some problems. I would either bury the plow or come up out of the ground. Had to learn to listen for it starting to struggle and lift the fast hitch a little or drop it a little. By the time I got to the end I was loving it. Made me sad when I was done. As for disking, now I know why you guys say not to put your thumbs inside the spokes on the steering wheel. Disked right up till dark and somemore this AM. Pulled the disk with the H in 3rd adjusted to take the biggest bite. Oh man you gotta love that sound and the little blue flame out the stack right at dusk. Thanks for turning me on to this plowing stuff guys I love it. The second most fun thing I have ever done on a tractor.
Paul
If you look at the photos you can tell I have a lot to learn yet. Pulled a spike tooth harrow over it this AM and it's a smooth as butta!

Does this set of disks look familiar? If anyone knows what model or who made them, please let me know. These are the same as whats on the back of Pauls H.

Mace: I have two model numbers for you, McCormick Deering 10A or 10B. I have photos of both in front of me, and I can't see a whole lot of difference in either. Both were introduced in 1931 and both were available in 5, 6, 7 and 8 sizes. The B is shown with plain blades, and the notes say nothing about cut aways being an option. The A is shown with cut away and notes say, " the No, 10A shown here featured cut away blades for maximum penetration". I rather doubt cut away blades determine the model number.

I just went and got a magnifying glass the 10B uses a crank and screw to change angle of gangs. It would look to me as though your disk is a model 10A. Bear in mind, my reference is the book 150 Years of IH by CH Wendel. He does have a tendancy not to cover all, thus there could be another disk not shown. I doubt that in the case of disks, as there are numerous other disks shown, plus the 10A and 10B were built from 1931 until 1960. He seems to show two larger size disks running from roughly 1930 through to 1960, plus the introduction of wheel controlled disks in 1961.

Hugh,

Looks as though I may have a 10A. Both front rows of disks have some cut aways on them. Thank you much for your help.

Yours is just like mine but maybe in better shape. I don't know the model but on mine if you look at the shaft or axle between the disk they are stamped with IH on them. I have not looked at it close enough yet to see If I can find any numbers or modles on it. My father in law has the same one also.

Paul,

Maybe I can narrow it down now that I know it is an IH disk. Thanks for the reply and nice to meet you on the forum.

That looks like a great job, especially for the 1st time and with missing parts. Nice tractors and photo sites. Tim

Paul, great photos! I'm no plowing expert either, but I have disked more acres than I care to think about with an H and a disk much like yours. I don't remember who made it, but it was a 7-ft. model and had about the same kind of paint job as the one in your photos. I enjoyed browsing several of your albums. You have a great-looking family and new home. David

Bob: I think Paul doing better than that. Why give him a set of coulters, replace those missing linkages on his Super C fast hitch, and we'll be sending him off to match plowing competitions. Anyone who can do that well with those three things missing, should not be allowed in the novice class.

Nice Picture! I would love to find a place like that to plow with my Super A and the 2/12 that I have.It could use a good work out before the tractor ride to find any new leaks if any.

I got the hitch book in frt of me. Plowing requires leveling link (left side bar). Working depth or draft is controlled by the right side bar in extended position. When plowing the two quick attach pins in the hitch yoke are put in the upper storage holes. I don"t see it but I think the lift rod pin next to the hyd. cyl. gets removed and put in the little hole on the left upright side of the drawbar for safe keeping. Jim

Paul, I think that when you "still" have that snow plow on you are losing some of your rear drawbar control capabilities (sp) with that linkage. We have not plowed with our Super C in a long time but I am going to take a look at it. Your tractor should not be struggling. Also there is a verticle shaft in the back of your tractor that a pin can be installed in if the pin is in you can block the draw bar and lift the back of the tractor when it is out it will allow the draw bar to float or in your case the plow to float or stay at at cosistent depth take a look back there. Also the draw bar should float left and right there are pins with two alowable positions on the left and right that will allow this. I am far from an expert but I have spent some time with this rig. Please excuse the spelling.

Hi Ted, I did have the pin in. I noticed when I put to much down pressure on it I could lift the rear wheels. Didn't know if I should pull the pin or leave it in. Ooops

Paul: In those conditions you shouldn't need to touch your fast hitch control, to control depth. Your hitch lift does not control depth. You've got something missing, could you post 2 photos showing complete area from front rockshafts back to rear axles. For plowing there are linkages from each front rockshaft down to hitch, one controls the depth and the other controls the side tilt of the hitch. I can't see the one on right but then photo is not close up either.

I have much the same plow, just hitching is different, your 2 point and mine 1 point. My 130 would waltz through those conditions plowing a uniform 6" deep in 2nd gear. The lack of coulters in sod will make it bit more difficult.

It can't be very old or thick sod, or you would never plow without coulters. Again I suspect geography has some effect on this. Around here grass sods more than 3 years old would just tear ragged, and half the furrow would turn each way.

Your right Hugh, My fast hitch is missing the bar on the left that goes from the hitch to touch control. I saw one in a Junk yard once and I should have picked it up. Never had a clue at that time I would ever be plowing. The man I bought the land from said he had used it for pasture and cutting hay off of since the 1960s so it has some pretty good sod. On the right hand side the bar that comes off the hitch has is just bolted to the frame. I have seen some super Cs that have a little loop on the back of the rock shaft for that to hook to but my rock shaft does not have that loop. My fast hitch may have been added to this tractor at sometime.

Paul: The linkage coming up in front of brake pedals and pined to torque tube in your photo, has a telescope extension and should be hooked into take right rockshaft. That raises and lowers front of hitch, thus controling depth of the plow. The one on the left side controls side tilt for your hitch. I'm not quite sure how that works. The offsets have a leveling crank for this.

That Super C was a deluxe jobbie in her day. Complete power control of the plow, and on the move at that. That was supposed to put Messers Ford and Ferguson in their respective places. And it could have had IH forgotten about fast hitch on big tractors, built a utility version of Super C, then added live pto and hi-low gears to offsets and Super C, 200, etc. They finally did some of it with 240, but too little too late.

Here are some photos of the hitch Hugh from when I went through this tractor. There is a veiw of the left rear on photo # 16 of 29. You should be able to double click on the photos and inlarge them.

Good job, Paul! Nice looking machines. Now that you've got those plow shares scoured, make sure you put a heavy coat of grease on 'em!
