Recently My son bought a 1964 I H C V196 truck, the V 8 engines valve covers are about 24 inches long. Question is what is the cubic inch of this engine, is the engine information some where on the chassis or on the engine block, THANKS

today I took the advice of a local yokel, he said to call the local I H C Truck dealer with the V I N number and the dealer could look it up on his computor, The whiz kid at the dealer parts said his records went back to 1972 and wanted to know why any one would want to work on a 42 year old truck? Thank for the attemps to help me identify the big V 8..

There are 4 big block engines. 401, 461, 478, and 549. The difference is in crankshaft stroke and bore. There are 2 different ones of each. Engines look pretty much alike except the bigger ones have an oil cooler and some have 4 barrel carb. These are powerful gas hogs that don"t hang together really well. Do not over rev it.

I can find none of the mentioned paperwork in the cab, I have compared the size with the 304,345 & 392 engines, my conclusion is that it is the 549 cube. This is a ex fire truck, thanks for the help.

The following engines have similar external look: 304, 345, and 392 CID there should be (but often isn't) a "Line Setting" Production ticket in the glove box. It is a piece of paper 8.5X11.

Did you look in the glove box?
