Hope somebody can help me out on this cause i have no idea. I was hooking up the lights on my 1966 farmall 140, when i bought it they were a mess and not working. I took the rear light apart and found it was a sealed beam light but had a small bulb on the outside of the sealed beam with the backside of the beam painted red. So is this a combo light??? if so, how do i hook my dash switch up to use both??? the light does NOT have a knob on top to switch between the two. my dash switch has Off, B, D, R

Mitch: My 63 140 has the sealed beam with, red back and bulb behind the sealed beam to shine through the red back of sealed beam. That rear light however has rotary switch on light.

My tractor had a head light missing when I got it. I bought a matching light with no rotary switch, thinking it was a headlight. When I took it apart, it turned out to be just like yours. I converted it to a headlight by removing small bulb and changing the sealed beam.

My 656 operated somewhat like your tractor in some respects. It had 4 head lights, two rear working lights and flashers on the fenders. As I recall it had OFF plus D and B whereby the flashers operated, without rear working lights. It also had a 4th position whereby flashers stopped and rear working lights came on. I think that 4th position said something like BR meaning bright and rear.

yes, that is a sealed beam for a late combo lite. But unless you have the little bulb mounted to shine through it it won't do you much good.

Find which wire comes from the B terminal and which one comes from the R terminal. Set up the wiring so that the red bulb is on when the switch is in the D or B position and the white bulb comes on in the R position. That is the way my 560 is wired.

To a point, yes. You can run the wire from the R terminal to the red light. Then you can run a wire from either the D or the B position (your choice of which position you want it to be on) to the white light. Depending on how the switch is set up there may be a terminal on it that is powered in both the D and B positions but not in the red position. If your switch has one this could be run to the white light and it would be on in both positions.

I’d be interested in knowing why you are thinking about wiring it that way. More curiosity that anything I guess.

None of the combo rear lights I've ever run across have used sealed beams. Rather they all have had a large, bayonet base bulb (like a #1156) for the work light, and a small instrument panel bulb (#53?) under a red "jewel" for the tail light.

Only a single wire runs to the rear light - a rotary switch on top of the lamp housing selects which bulb lights up. (Note that the rear lamp lights "bright" in both the D and B settings on the headlight switch)

I've seen the sealed beam type combo light just as mitchp describes. In fact I have one on a tractor.

All the ones I've seen have one wire to feed it and a switch on the housing to select one bulb or the other.

Me too. It was like that on the 756 years ago as I recall. Must've been something IH started in the mid '60s.

No, mine is set up differently. Mine is fed by one wire which is hot when the swith is on "B" or "D". the switch to select the red bulb or white bulb is on the light itself.
