When I run my M at high idle under basically any kind of load it lopes real bad. Have noticed it getting worse the last few times I used it. I am guessing that it might be the spring in the govenor. Is this guess right, and is there a way to check whether that is indeed the problem? Are there any other possible solutions or problems that might cause this? Thanks in advance for the help.

Engine warm & running at fast idle (wide open throttle) turn high speed mixture screw (located on bottom of carb) in or out until the engine runs the fastest & smoothest. Then turn the screw out 3/4 turn for a little extra fuel for power.

Most likely the carb high speed mixture screw is set too lean. (With the engine at operating temperature turn the screw CCW 1/4 turn at a time and see if it improves...)

Otherwise problem is stiffness in the governor mechanism itself, or somewhere the linkage between the governor and the carb throttle shaft. (With the governor cover removed, the engine stopped and the governor handle set at idle, the governor output link should move up and down freely with light finger pressure.)

It probably is the spring in the governor, but also you might need to do a thorough inspection of all the governor parts and then make sure the linkage from the gov to the carb is correct.

It may be running too lean. This can cause this problem.
