I have a tractor that I'm trying to find out some info on. It is a series diesel IH/Farmall. The serial number is 36334. Narrow front. Torque amplifier equipped. I can't seem to find this serial number listed. Anyone know what it is and what horse power the engine is?

Hi folks, thanks so much for so many replys. Had a dissapointing day. The tractor was at a local scrap yard and they were to hold it for me to pick up today. They forgot to mark it sold so by the time I got to it today the remaining sheet metal, wheels, heavy duty fast hitch, shifter, starter, generator, intake manifold, carb, steering shaft, distributor and some misc bits are gone. I still picked it up as the engine is a 4cyl series diesel(starts on gas/runs on diesel). I have a similar engine in my TD-9 dozer and a larger version in a TD-14. I did get it running using my Fordson Dexta pto and a reversing gearbox connected to the IH via the pto. This provided the power needed to start it in diesel mode. I talked to the guy who pulled most of the parts and can get many of them back - for a price of course. He thought it was a 450 or possibly 400 series. It has the 3 spool hydraulic controls and flat belt drive. Even though the site was having problems with the photo section, I went through the photo ads and did see that some tractors were not equipped with the atachment points on the front corners of the nose that this tractor has. The shifter arm was on the left side of the top cover. The brake covers are cast not sheet metal. The steering shaft went over the engine - through the radiator - and into the top of the front end.
Any ideas what it is? More questions?
Thanks, Ron

If the steering shaft from steering wheel goes over top of engine and it has a narrow front with T/A and 4 cylinder, I think it would be a Farmall 400. MD,SMD had no T/A,350 and 450 serial numbers didn't go that high.SMTAD serial numbers all higher than yours. If its 4 cylinder and steering is not over engine, post back and let us know, only a few farmall fit there. If its 6 cylinder thats going to add more tractors to figure out.

The serial number doesn't help. They are not unique. Every tractor model that had more than roughly 36000 made will have a tractor with that serial number. There are literally dozens of models that would match your description at this point.

Also, when looking up serial numbers, you will almost never see your exact serial number listed. Every tractor has a different serial number. Only the FIRST serial number used in a particular year is listed for reference. If yours is higher than the first number for one year, and lower than the first number for the next year, it was made in that year.

You need to narrow it down. If you post a picture over in "help identify" to the left, someone will identify your tractor in a second. Otherwise, fugheddaboudit, the tractor's identity will remain a mystery forever.

That serial number would fit an MD, 400D, or 450D if it is a gas start. Does it have a carburetor and distributor on the right side and injector pump on the left?

Are the brake covers plain sheet metal?

It is going to take a photo or a much more detailed descrition. There is a Tractor Photos section in the Galleries to the left of this page. You might also look through the Photo Ads under the Marketplace section to the left of this page. IH/Farmall had a diesel as far back as the MD and its variations such as the SMDTA. Information such as the number of cylinders and the location of some of the major parts such as type of gear shifter, its location, and the number of gears. Is it a gas start? On some of the bigger diesels it would help to know where such things as the oil and fuel filters, etc. are. Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.
