Well i have my 48 super back together and needed to change the oil and filter. Took drain plug out and out came some anti-freeze. Oh i'm sick.cant decsribe how sick i am after seeing that.

No oil in the radiator that i can tell. just some nice green antifreeze in the bottom of the pan. I have no idea how long it has been there, just bought the tractor and it looked like it had a new head on it. What do i do refill with oil and see what happens.

i recently changed the freeze plug on the back of the block and cleaned the passage out. wonder if there is a hole there. it was pretty clogged and rusty.

No steam from the exhaust or any indication of a leak. Gas tank down for repair so i cant run it right now.

Oh i'm just sick,sick .sick

Here are my thoughts.

Leave the drain plug out of the pan and set a container under the drain and see if more anti-freeze comes out and how much. A few days will tell the story. No antifreeze coming out, go to church Sunday and praise the Lord.

If it is only a small amount that comes out, put about three heaping tablespoons of pepper in the radiator and drive it until the engine is good and warm. The pepper will work its way into leaking areas and seal them up as good as (or better than) any stop-leak that I’ve tried. Plus my radiator man actually blesses using pepper since it cooks out a lot easier than other products.

If that doesn’t fix it, well…let me just wish you good luck.

I feel your pain. I finally took the plunge 2 weeks ago a bought my 1st project, a 49 C. Tin wasn"t to beat up,fluids looked OK,Touch Control works good.
Well, I got it home from the auction and started making big plans. That all came to a screeching halt 2 days ago. I was flushing out the block and noticed water dripping out the clutch insp hole! Got it apart this morning,block is cracked in the water jacket behind carb,freeze plug is pushed out,and block is cracked between 2-3 cylinder. Sorry for the long post. Guess I"ll be searching for a block. Anyone know a place to check in central or N. central PA?

Your engine has wet cylinder sleeves, and the o-rings that seal them will eventually rot out. I would advise you to remove the oil pan and apply 15 psi to the radiator with a cooling system pressure tester. You'll see the leak for sure. Stop Leak products will not work (they never do anyway).

I am not sure if the tractor's radiator is pressure capped or just atmospheric. Either way putting 15 pounds in it will be too much for the radiator. The only way to put 15 psi in it would be to disconnect the radiator and plug the hoses going into the block, then pressurizing only the block. (I would do this if the system is a non-pressure rad.because they cannot stand any pressure) If it is a pressure cap rad, it is rated for 6 psi and 15 would likely show leaks where there are none.

The cap is non pressure.( the plain dome type with no holes). could i have the wrong cap?this had a rusty soup can for the cap when i bought it.

I was thinking that it could leak at the sleeve being wet sleeves. . I realy was hopeing i wouldn't have to tear the engine apart. I've been into this thing since day one and hopeing to stay out of the engine.

this tractor had antifreeze in it when i bought it. and after taking the fan assembly off and top hose housing i put new coolant in it.

freeze plug was weeping and after removal the passage was cruddy and rusty. I applied a water hose and backwashed it out the freezeplug hole.

so far, new bearing,seals in steering,final drives,transmission,brake bands,battery,rear tires,sediment bowl,hoses,rad cap,paint,draw bar,welding cracks in metal,new woodruff keys, freezeplug, carb kit, gear oil,motor oil,filter,assorted peices, and havn't done an ounce of work with it yet.

now ya know why i'm sick. still need rear rock shafts and brackets and rod to the front rackshaft to lift and lower rear arms.

If the cap fits, it is correct. The pressure caps are not compatible with the rad neck.
I hear you on the expenses issue, however it will be worth it for two reasons: 1} it is a cool tractor 2} you will have knowledge that serves a variety of other needs, and keeps the unit going.

It is common for the neoprene orings in the block to harden up. fixing them is not hard but does require disassembly of the engine. To be sure it is the problem, remove the pan and just look for antifreez leaks at the base of the cylinders.

(just costs a pan gasket)

Will be a couple of days till i try to run it again. Draining the antifreeze is a pain without ruining it. Brand new. I ran it the other night for the first time since i changed the freeze plug and cleaned the passage.

just to see if it would start and checked the tranny and brakes.probably just ran for 5 minutes.

i'm getting sicker. will it clog the radiator if i put in some sealer?like stopleak.

what would you recomend if it was your tractor?

JUst incase it does come back , it don't sound like a head gasket failure. Looks like it would be in a non pressure place to leak. I would think if it was a head gasket there would be other symptoms.

Been a while since i tore into an engine block.

I did run the tractor when i bought it, but could the antifreeze sit in the bottom and not be pulled and mixed with oil?

Just trying to figure out if the block is bad or not. Engine sounds good and strong. hav'nt done a compression check. need the gauge first. thanks

Run it chances are that the water got in the oil pan when the head was pulled off.When the head was removed it most likely filled the cylinders & was not immediately removed,then leaked down in to the oil pan. Run it after draining the oil and replacing it.keep a check on it to see if it comes back.

I agree with Pullin. Ran into the same thing one time. I would definately drain the oil, refill with anti-freeze and try it again and see what happens.

The only thing i had off of the engine was the top radiator housing. just wondered if there was any way that it could of got in that way. the oil was not milky. just plain ole green antifreeze in the bottom of the pan. maybe an ounce or so.

I agree w/Mike. Just wondering if by accident when you were putting the plug in and raking all the rusty gunk out of the block, that you might have punched a hole in the sleeve, Of course not, what am I thinking about. If the rusty gunk has been in the block for a long time, there is a possiblity that a pin hole has rusted into the sleeve and allowing antiF to drip into the pan. Remove the plugs and check for sight of or smell of antiF in the cylinders. If so then the sleeve has a pin hole in it. Check every thing before major surgery.

There is no way that you could run the engine and not mix up the oil with the antifreeze. It had to get in there after the last time it ran. I would drain all the oil and antifreeze out, put some fresh oil in and water only and try to run it again. Antifreeze is KILLER on bearings, so don't take the chance with it again until you are sure. If it leaks I would try to add some block seal.
