What position should the rotor be when the #1 cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke. Firing order 1342.

To add to what Pete said, you not only need to have #1 cylinder at TDC when the distributor rotor is pointing at the plug wire going to #1 cylinder plug, but also at TDC while it is on the compression stroke. It reaches TDC twice per one firing. If you get the other TDC you"ll be 180 degrees off.

Nobody can give you a simple answer to that. Because of the design, if the distributor has been off the engine it can be assembled with #1 in any position as long as the cap and wires are lined up with the correct sparkplugs. You are going to need to pull #1 one plug and bring it to TDC and go from there.
