I bought a 340 IH at a farm sale. Sounded good, looked good, was supposed to be just overhauled! Thought I bought it reasonable. Loaded it took it home. Started to plow the garden. When the oil pressure, went from 45lbs to 10lbs. At idle it showed about 3 lbs. Water temp 180' Shut it down. Pulled dip stick it is full of clean oil, looks like maybe 30wt. Pulled pan dropped rod and main bearing looked new.very little wear, std. Put it back togather, Same thing happened again? Dose the oil filter cause this prolbem? Is the oil pump shot? Is the valve shot in the pump has new spring in it? has a new bottom plate on it. Oh by the way if you pull the dip stick as soon as it happens the dip stick is on full and is not hot! Any ideas?

You should plasti-gage the bearings to see how much clearance is on the crankshaft. If that engine has cam bearings and if they were not replaced, they will cause low oil pressure too.

Rod and main bearings should have .001" to .0015"
clearance. Hal

I just went thru this with a C-153 engine and I took the oil pump apart and flatten the cover and put in new gaskets and I have over 30psi at a idle with 30wt.
