The exhaust manifold had a leak, on the underside, below the exhaust pipe. With the pipe removed you could look down in and see it very well. I welded it shut (stick weld) and then vacuumed it out. Started it up and it knocks quite loudly. Obviously some slag or metal is somewhere it should not be. Do I have to remove the head or does someone have a magic wand I can wave over it? I remember this happened to someone else, and I think he did a rebuild afterward.

I would wonder if using an air fitting on the spark plug hole and feeding it 100lbs of compressed air while welding would keep the cylinder/valves clear of any welding slag/spatter while welding up a manifold.....

Yep , it happened to me i was just tryen to be mr. nice guy as i can weld with the best and even though i was careful a couple BEE BEE's got down in the cylinder trashed the head and piston and beat the rod bearing up . That was the last time i ever tryed to weld one even though the job looked good on the manifold for what was saved on the price of a new maifold to the cost of the engine job ya did not save a penney and what it is going to cost ya to fix it your going to hate yourself in the morning . So BOYS AND GIRLS if it is cracked spend your moldy money and get a new one it is a bunch cheaper.
