What kind of experiences have you had with your local IH parts dealers?

I stopped in at mine (near Sparta, MI) several years ago. As I waited for about five minutes, the two guys behind the counter shot the bull with each other without even acknowledging me. I figured they didn't need my money, and walked out.

I finally decided to give them another chance a month or so ago. There was one customer ahead of me at the counter. He was plenty hot because he had called ahead to make sure his parts were in, before making the LONG trip to pick them up. When he got there, you guessed it -- no parts!

I figured I would order a minor part (priced at about twice what it should be) to see what kind of job they would do. That was on a Saturday, and they told me the part would be in the following Friday and they would call me. Well, that Friday came and went -- and then some -- and no call. (If they're waiting for me to call them, they're in for a long wait. I can easily substitute a reasonably priced part from another vendor.)

Two questions:

1 - How have your dealers behaved (good, bad, ugly)?

2 - Are there any dealers in/near western Michigan who are on the ball?

I wouldn't trade my CNH parts guy for anything. I buy all my stuff at Carter and Gruenwald (yes I am lucky to have them only 15 minutes away). They stock an unbelievable amount of parts...not to mention what they don't have, they can put in my hands in just a couple of days. Always done right by me...and always a fair price. Just my 2 cents.

I deal with Empire Tractor in Cortland, NY and they couldn't be better. I'm restoring a 53 Super H and they either have what I need or take the time to find it for me somewhere else. They aren't paying the mortgage with what I buy from them but they give me just as much time as they do their biggest customers. Couldn't ask for any better service than what they give me.

I needed Tie rod ends for a Cockshutt 40, sent the old one to Empire, and they matched it up for me. Inexpensive too.

The IH dealer for me is a 50 mile drive one way. They have been good as I call ahead and parts are waiting. I have also a short line dealer who is 8 miles away and can furnish a lot of items and what he can't he will get from the dealer at a slight charge which saves me time and trouble.

I don't actively farm any more but if I need parts I go to my old dealer Vestal Equipment at Bolivar, MO owned by R.D. Vestal and was started by his Dad in 1949. They are Case IH, Massey, and Bush Hog. The parts manager Randy King ( no relation, but I wouldn't care if he was. ) has been there since he was 17. He is proably in mid 40's now. One other parts man Mike has been there since he was 17 about mid 30's now. Randy knows his parts and is very very helpful.

Mr. Farmall, there is ONE IH dealer in New Jersey--Storr Tractor in Somerville. I have used them for 20 years. Last week, I needed a valve cover gasket and final drive gaskets for my 1966 140 and they were in stock! Oil pan plug seals they had to order. Took three days which is the usual. Parts guys are helpful but no one knows the old iron. They were not IH prior to the Case acquisition; they were Case. They also do Bush Hog, which takes a lot longer if you don't pay shipping on special order from Alabama.

Fergus IH in Fergus Falls has 4 really great parts men; Dennis, Dennis, Paul & Todd. they will always greet you with a smile and offer any assistnace they can. They will look for any part you need from the oldest tractor on up.
Would you believe I worked behind that same parts counter the summer of 1967??

My local IH dealer has a great parts department. They find the NLA stuff everyone else can't or won't even try. They "think outside the parts bin" to find solutions for me too. The parts guy is avail 24-7-365. Backorders are no problem either....oh that's right, the parts guy is ME!!!

Compare to another IH dealer near me that won't even order parts for anything pre 66 series without cash up front. They send their customers with H-M-Cub-400-560 needs to us as they can't be "bothered" with this old stuff. Too many B.T.O.'s buying grain carts and planters from them instead.....

I can't complain about Humboldt Red Power in Iowa at all. They've been real good about getting parts in a timely fashion. Price is never going to be a bargain at any dealership but that's to be expected in this day and age. They've always treated me with great respect and have provided me information and tips to help me me out. I think they do a pretty good business.

I don't care for my local dealer, but it strictly a money issue. I have compared his prices with others, and he is always higher. I asked one time at a neighboring dealer, and he said they suspect the local dealer is selling at 110% of suggested retail. Anyone else run into this?

I have a dealer in the town I live in, used to be Becker Farm Equipment and were bought out by Vincents who have other dealerships. Service is excellent, they order out of Toronto for non stocked parts and its there in two days, most parts are in stock and they can check their other dealerships for parts via computer so you know where a part is immediately. During seeding and harvest they extend hours and someone is on call for parts on Sunday if you break down, they are good on the counter and have a good ordering system for parts, phone you when the part arrives, can't say enough good things about them...Mike in Exeter Ontario

The one I deal with is about 20 miles from me, has been in the IH business for over 100 years, the guy behind the counter has been doing this a long time, service is great, and I get what I need when I want it, but IH parts are starting to get a little pricey. Needed a fan for an A, called dealer, $270.00, aftermarket, $79.50.

If you need IH parts, give Bermuda Ken a call at 1-866-FARMALL or visit them at cngco.com

Our local parts guys are really good. We are a big farming area so they need to do a good job or they will lose business to Mother Deere ;o)

We have been dealing with the local IH dealer, Gibbs Equipment in Bellevue, OH for a long, long time. They have a couple of parts men who will bend over backwards to help. I noticed that they have quite a few out of town/state customers in recent years - must be the service issue stated here. We have priced bearings/seals/etc a few times from industrial bearing suppliers and always find IH dealer prices slightly lower and without freight charges. Also, the parts generally arrive faster. I'm a big fan of the dealer. If you have had trouble elsewhere, call them. 419-483-4970 - ask for Paul in Parts.

I went to my Case/IH dealer a few months back to ask some advice on plumbing a single spool hydraulic valve on my 53 Super M. I took the valve assembly with me so they knew exactly what I had. The parts man behind the counter had no problem coming out to my truck looking at the valve and then looking up the parts manual for the Super M. His manager caught wind of what he was doing and physically pulled him aside and basically demanded that I was going to have to bring the tractor to them in order for them to do anything. When I explained to him I was just wanting a basic plumbing diagram he just blurted "you need to bring it in" and walked away with the employee in tow. I haven"t been back nor will I be. On the other hand, I restored a JD 290 2 row planter last spring and the JD dealer dang near broke his neck finding NOS parts for it. What can I say??? All my tractors are red but I"m finding other sources than the dealer for parts. My 2 cents.

I have not read the other replies, so these are unbiased facts about my dealer. I have had no problems that were the part guys fault and very few others. The dealer keeps very few parts for the older tractors. They come from the distribution center in Kansas City. If ordered by 10 AM they are at the dealer at opening the next day. Otherwise it takes 2 or 3 days to get them from whereever they are. I always ask the dealer if they are in Kansas City, they almost always are. Good personnel, no goofing off, no problems. I have parts manuals, and give them the number, I very seldom have them look anything up. This speeds the process. Thus my $5-$200 order gets the same attention as some guy spending several hundred or several thousand $$.

I deal locally with Messicks in Elizabethtown and C.B.Hoober in Intercourse PA for IH/Farmall tractor parts. Both have been good to deal with, no complaints from here.

I deal in Cub Cadet parts with Hollingers in Mountville, now there is the best dealer I've ever dealt with for anything. They have bent over backwards to help me out on more than one occasion.

I have 2 IH dealers close by, 20 miles in opposite directions. The one dealer doesn't deal much in the old stuff, doesn't seem to care to. I have ordered parts from him, more often then not he has messed up and the parts were wrong. The other deal is great. They are in Mennonite country where there are still alot of old Farmalls in use. He spends the time, and gets my orders right the first time. He gets my money, to heck with the other guy..... ..... ..

I can go to four within 40 miles of me here,Hastings,Grand Island,Aurora and Central City. All of them are great. They always ask if I need the part over nite or put it on a stock order, which usually takes the better part of a week to get,but saves shipping charges.Never a complaint, and I'm a real small customer compared to most.I go to the Grand Island and Hastings ones as a rule, and the other two if I think of something as I drive by or see something on their lot. The CaseIH dealer i go to for parts is about 40 miles round trip. I have gone there several times in the past year alone, and have only had trouble with them once. Which was about two weeks ago, and it was only because it was the new guy behind the counter, and didnt quite have full expierience yet. Otherwise they pretty much know me by name now.

This isn't in regard to parts, but rather about customer relations.

Last year, I was interested in getting a new lawn mower. Stopped out to the local Case/IH "superstore", and inquired about a new Cub Cadet priced about $7000. Since I wanted to trade in a Farmall C w/ Woods mower, nobody could do anything until they looked at the Farmall...which they would do "next week". Well, next week came and went, no one came to look. After two weeks, I called..."we'll be out tomorrow" was the answer. Waited another week, still nobody showed up.

Decided to call a another dealer about 30 miles away. Told him about my trade. He came the following day and looked at the "C" while I was gone, called me in the evening, and we made a deal. I taped a check to the ol' tractor, and he delivered the new mower and loaded up the "C" on a Saturday while I was at an auction. To this day, I have not met him face to face, yet received better service than with the local IH dealer!

I'm sure the STX450 buyers get priority; but, I feel every potential customer deserves the same respect.

know exactly what you mean, my experience with the local ih dealer, I (foolishly) waited 2 hours for the saleman I needed to get off the phone, he was dealing on a new tractor sale, i even sat down outside his office and he acted like I wasnt even there. Smae salesman also foiled my attemp to rent 2 spreaders that were there for a clean out, owner OK'ed it, slaeman said he had a deal in the works and needed them on the lot so that was that, spreaders havemnt moved in a year and a half. Funny though, if I drive up in my 1 ton and park by the NEW skid loaders or tractors he always comes a running. Then I act like i am intersted in spending a half mil to get em exited, then I offer $10 for the old rotary hoe in the back lot. Burn me once..... ..

Funny thing is that its all the same company just a differant location. The one place has only been there about 5-10 years and the other place has been there for aboput 30 years

They will hunt up any obscure part and bend over backwards to help me. and no, I don't spend a lot of money there, probably less than $2000 a year.

Our dealer in Batavia NY I think is great - they have spend a lot of time with me looking for part numbers on equipment made in 1940's and 50's. They are always professional and do what ever they can to help me - often reaching a dead end because of the age of the equipment I have.

For the most part I have had good luck with the dealer in Scottsbluff, NE.

Depends a lot on who is behind the counter, everyone wants to be waited on by the one person they think knows what is going on. Usually, there are some new people who need some help and patience.

Years ago I worked as a counter man for an electrical wholesale supply place. Having been on both sides of the counter I'm more understanding of some of the situations parts people face. Not an excuse for poor customer service but I can assure you the first few weeks on the job were a trial for the customer and me!!
I still have lots of friends from the electrical contractors and customers I served back then but it took some time and lots of effort on my part to get what they needed and learn the lingo.

I have three within a 35 mile radius, one that was a Case dealer that I have no experience with. One made me so mad it took me almost 5 years before I went back and then it was for a $.75 cent item. They asked where I’d been. I have gone back a few times but only when I happen to be in that town and need something right away. I will not make a special trip to see them for anything.

The third one works with me on everything very well. They will order parts for me either on stock order (no additional freight) or special if I want it bad enough to pay extra shipping. They will set parts out for after hours pickup, and will put it on account or I can put a check in the box when I pick it up. They will check on construction equipment parts for me to see if they can get them in and save me 70 miles a round trip. They have sent parts direct to me and billed it on account. I have no complaints with them except one of the parts guys isn’t the newest tool in the box or the brightest bulb on the tree but is the son (maybe co-owner now) of the owner. He tries, just lacks knowledge and experience that a parts man really needs.

It’s not only CaseIH, I’ve had Deere parts people make me so mad that even a trip to the closest town (10 miles) wasn’t enough incentive, I’d drive 25 to get better service and less lip…

Good parts people (I know one lady that knew Deere stuff inside and out) are hard to find. When you find one, buy them a beer if you get the chance…

Absolutely CaptainK, good parts people are worth their weight in gold. It's a 100 mile round trip and two ferry crossings to my nearest Case/IH dealer, so I do all of my dealings via fax and phone. The parts guy that I deal with will put things on their stock order to save me freight, or will special order even the smallest part if I pay the extra shipping. The only problem I ever had was when I needed to pick up Hytran because it was hazmat and couldn't be shipped. It was a Sunday and when I got there, I found a note saying that the parts guy couldn't run my card number. He left his home phone number and asked me to call. I called and he made a special trip from home, on a Sunday, to open the store so I could get the Hytran. Since then, I found that if I am not in a hurry, their outside sales guy will drop off anything at the large farm down the road from me with no extra freight charge.
