hello all, I have a problem, with my 454 , it has a loader on it, has power steering, not hydro static, and the hydraulics were always strong, {the tractor sat all winter with the box blade on in the up position and never leaked down,} I recall when putting it in the shed that the loader was kind of jumpy, maybe air in the lines it felt like, today it felt the same way, but was ok after a while, I was using it for a while today, and ended with using the box blade to level some ground, all worked good for close to 1 1/2- 2 hrs hrs, then I felt the power steering starting to tighten, the hyrdaulics on the box blade became slow, and then the squelling sound, from behind and under me it sounded like, I took it to the shop, checked the fluid, a little low but nothing major, I put some in, and lited the front wheels with the loader to turn wheel to get rid of air, seemed ok, went back to work, was still squelling a bit, but everything worked ok, for about 45 minutes, then the pS went out, the box blade would not lift, and the loader would not lift or curl, and the squelling is non stop now, have I fried the hydro pump? or is there a filter that may need changing that could help,, thansk for any info, and sorry for the long post , but wanted to give as much info as possible ,pat

Hi Maplehill, if the hydraulic system is squeeling that would indicate the pump is good but something is plugged the output side of the hydraulic system and everything is being dumped thru the relief valve and the squealing noise is the relief valve. Under your left running board is the hydraulic filter canister, behind the filter canister is the MCV valve. The MCV valve's function is to rout the high pressure hydraulic oil from the hydraulic pump to the various users of the hydraulic system, like power steering, 3pt etc. The relief valves are located in this MCV valve. DON'T ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE MCV VALVE without a shop service manual and proper tools.

If you have remotes out the back, just work the remote control lever forward and backward a couple times to make sure the control valve is not stuck.

thanks I will have to take a look at that, I started it today and the hydro worked , the loader lifted, but still sguelling, took off the box blade and put it on another tractor, I will look this over in a day or two, I appreciate the comeback, I think it started making this squelling and PS problm after I hooked onto a stubborn rock when I was box blading, I seem to recall it jerking, and then let loose, it may have started after that,, Hoping it is simple fix, the tractor must know I was thinking of selling her I just dont use it enough since i got the back hoe,, I will post if I find anything thanks, I will find my book, I found a few of them one for my 544, 444, but not the 454, .thansk pat

The squealing is probably being made by the relief valve. That tells me there's either a blockage in the system, or the relief valve is stuck open like KB-826 says.

I have a 574 that is just like your 454 on the hydraulic system and the hydraulic filter is on the left side just behind the flood board on a big hydrualic block on side of tractor. This sounds to me like your hydraulic pump has seen better days and the pump is on the back side of that big hydraulic block where the filter is.

Thats what I was afraid of, kinda just wanted to confirm my thoughts, I am figuring the pump is a big dollar item ???as the front spindle I replaced last fall was way many $$$$,,maybe that was because it had the swept back front axle, , thanks for the input, pat

I'm not familiar with the hydraulics on a 454, but mabey you've got a relief valve sticking open? At least thats what comes to mind when you say it makes a squealing noise.
