Hey folks I am posting for a friend of mine with a 674 IH. All hydraulics were working fine till he changed the hydraulic filter....now absolutely no hydraulics work on the tractor. What could be the problem, air in the system? If so,how should we go about bleeding it. We have tried bleeding the lines. WE have tried working the lift arm control levers up and down slowly with a steady RPM on the advice of a local mechanic. The loader is down of course, but we have moved the tractor back and forth several feet, so the clutch is working properly, but the PTO shaft will not turn. I hope you guys can help us out on this one. THanks for any replies. John

Ted in NE has the correct answer, it will happen 8 out of 10 times you change the filter on 74, 84, 85, 95,series ihc and case 4000 world series built at the Doncaster plant.

John,
I had the exact same thing happen to my 674. I've changed the filter twice now over the past couple of years and it did it both times. Bernard le mecano from Canada told me to do the same thing Ted in NE said to do and it worked each time. Good luck!!

Hey Hey!! Thanks a million guys! It took about 3 minutes to fix the problem....oh and about four days of head scratching!!! We took the spring and spool out of the MCV like Ted said to and she coughed some air out before the oil started flowing again. We had contacted several local mechanics and the local IH dealer, and nobody had anything to help us.....but this forum was the answer once again. Man this tractor is BACK IN SERVICE!

HEY JOHN, DON'T TEAR THAT TRACTOR APART YET!!!
At least try this little trick first. Start the tractor and let run at a fast idle with the hydraulic control in the raise position. Now use air presure from a blow gun to blow air into the dip stick tube on the left side of the transmission housing. Your pump is having trouble self priming and this will give it a boost. You will hear air coming out from under the seat because there is a breather there, so you cannot put too much air to hurt anything.
This is a common problem with model tractor.
This has always worked for me. Hope it helps you.

Are you sure you got the sealing ring on filter shell and on the center bolt in correctly.

Hi John, the Vet is probably correct, the teeth are worn off the pressure plate. You should be able to look thru the inspection plate on the bottom by the bell housing. The PTO is the outer spline shaft that is driven by the pressure plate and should rotate with the engine. If the PTO shaft turns, is it possible that the hydraulic filter was wrong part or installed incorrectly? Sufficient HyTran fluid in the transmission?

Sounds to me like the splines on the PTO input are toaste as the hyd . pump runs off the pto drive and it is not uncommon for the splines that go into the pressure plate to strip out along with the pto input shaft. SOooooo i guess it is time for a split and see what ya got .

OK we know the filter is in correct...it is just way to simple to be installed incorrectly. He even put the old filter back in just to make sure, and that didn"t help. We will look in the inspection plate tomorrow and get back here soon.
Can you give us any reason why everthing hydraulic worked perfectly till he changed the filter? This is just too coincidental from a mechanical standpoint....do the clutch splines just "let go" all at once? I just get the feeling we are overlooking something.

The only other thing that it could be is that the pump is getting bad and does not have enough suction to draw the oil into it to get prime also did you replace the seal around the cover with a new one as this can cause a air leak and not draw oil but if the PTO does not turn with out a load on it that is my thinking but i do not have my books in the house and i have only worke on a couple of the 74 seires tractor so i am by no means and expert here but i have seen this happen on the larger tractors all the time around here .

Just need to bleed the air out of the system. Usually will not have this problem but can happen. On the bottom edge of the MCV below the filter cover, remove the larger hex plug, there will also be a spring and flow divider spool come out. keep the parts in order so can install corectly. Set a bucket under the hole & start the tractor up. Shut off when oil comes out. assemble spring valve & plug should work.

OK,thanks for the tip on bleeding the system, Ted. That will be tried first thing tomorrow morning and we will let you know how it turns out. We haven't checked this forum for several days, and didn't realize we would have this much info come back to us. thanks guys.
