any ideas on how begin?

Guess I should pull the top cover and knowing less than nothing about transmissions do ... what exactly or ball parkish... I am at a total loss.

I should probably purchase another parts tractor for a rear end?

Could be complicated, could be simple. Pull out the shift lever and see if you can move the rails into neutral. It's possible to get those things stuck in two gears.

You should buy a working H and sell yours. If you are determined to fix it we can walk you through it but education is expensive no matter how you pay the tuition. Might be as simple as the slider rails stuck. Is it stuck in nuetral or stuck in gear?

purchased it that way. Farmer parked it years and years and years ago, with no recollection as to why he parked it.

The engine is free, and the clutch will disengage the transmission, which allowed us to roll the tractor onto the trailer.

Would a running engine perhaps perhaps break the shifer loose from 2nd gear(where it currently is stuck)?

I'll bet if you drain the tranny you will find it full of water. I have a 2N ford that was the same way. But after getting it to run and refilling the trnny with a thinner oil it has broke free on 2 of the 4 gears. I'd guess if you drain it and refill it then get it to run and either drive it around in that gear or jack it up and let it spin its wheels if will probably brake free.

Could weel be condensation has rusted the gear on the shaft. I'd unbolt the cover and have a look. third party image
