Went to look at a 1945 farmall h for sale today when i took it for a test drive it wouldn"t stay in fifth gear kept poping out. I was wondering what the cause might be i also noticed that a lot of noise coming from the rear end or trasmission or did the older h"s have some noise in this area i have a farmall sh that has no noise at all any speed or gear. I checked the rear end oil and it was milky looked to have water into it to me would this make a little noiser it was full of oil one other thing the battery was 6 volt with neg. ground i have never seen this in a 6 volt. Thanks to any help

I may have not explained this quite right about the noise 1-4 was quite noisey fifth didn't seem that bad on noise just pop out of gear. thats what i was wondering if it could be a problem later on. the rear end has a lot of water in it took the oil check plug out and nothing but milky oil came out that was after i run it down the road a few times i don't know how much over full it is didn't want to let it run out on the ground wouldn't that be telling you that the ring and pinion are all right sorry about not explaing this good and being late getting back to you guys. Thanks for all the feed back. Robert

Agressive shifting from 4th to fifth (and lots of it) will wear the spline teeth on the inside of fourth/fifth slider. (A month ago it was a major topic in the archives.) The input shaft, and the Slider gear look good from the outside, but they are worn to nubs on the inside. Replacement is the only solution. Good used gears will do.

I had a '44 H that popped out of 4th. I had to replace the 4th and 5th sliding gear and the 3rd and 4th stationary gear to solve the problem...fairly decent size job. I guess what I'm saying is that the 4th and 5th sliding gear is probably worn down on the H your talking about. In doing this repair to my H I ended up getting a whining noise in 5th gear....I think its because I was running a new 4th and 5th sliding gear on a used 5th stationary. If you replace the gears on the H your talking about you should replace the 4th and 5th sliding(this is one gear) and the 5th stationary gear...hope this helps.

Jarrod - There's no "gears" in engagement in 5th gear in an H or M, they're all direct drive thru the sliding gear topshaft. The sliding 4th/5th gear engages the splines on the back end of the transmission input shaft that is separated from the top sliding shaft by the pilot bearing. There are gears in mesh like the constant mesh gears where the initial reduction from 1650 rpm to 540 rpm takes place but if there's no load on the PTO or hyd. belly pump there's no load on those gears and they shouldn't make much noise. If You have gear whine or howl in 5th gear You didn't have before You may have the top sliding shaft/pinion slightly out of the old position it ran in on the ring gear. Could also be the small pinion gears howling on the bull gears. FWIW, every M & H that has had the transmission & rearend apart that I've seen normally makes noise. As long as the oil is clean they should still run another 30-40 years. ;-)

Thanks DrEvil, I'll copy down your advice....I sold the H after running it for about 6yrs with the whine. I told the guy who bought it the same thing as I put on here....it didn't get any worse and the oil stayed clean...as you said it just had a whine that it didn't have before I replaced the gears...thanks again...I always wondered what I had off.
