I just acquired a 1951 Farmall H. It has a #30 trip bucket loader on it which works pretty well. It doesn"t have any wierd noises. The one thing that bothers me is a leak coming from the back of the tractor. It is on the bottom, between the belly pump and transmisson. A nieghbor told me it is the "rear main seal". I don"t know if the oil is coming from the Trans or the belly pump. It is black oil, needing changing but I"m just wondering what it is coming from. I think it"s the belly pump so i just put more oil in the belly pump resivour. The other problem is that it only has three positions on the light switch box. Which are lights off, lights dim, and lights bright. The previous owner said that the generator (6 volt system still) was rebuilt be he occasionally ends up with a dead battery. The amp gauge is questionable. It has a crack in the glass and even when the battery is unhooked it reads a little to the left of zero. It moves a little more to the left when the tractor is running and /or with the lights on. Is there a way to check the generator? Thanks for any info on my two problems.

The leak you describe may very well be from the belly pump, but it is likely that you have leaky seals in the transmission case where the transmission shaft and the countershaft enter. You will probably drop the belly pump in any event.

Lots of info on changing these seals in the archives, and I would check there first and then we can answer any questions you still have.

Sounds like your generator is not working. First thing I'd do is replace the ammeter. You can then tell with certainly whether the generator is charging the battery, also whether there is a current drain on the battery with everything shut off.

More than like the oil leak is from one (or both) seals at the front of the transmission. The upper seal is fir the input shaft from the engine, the lower one is the drive for the hydraulic pump.

If you remove the dust cover under the tractor between the belly pump and the transmission you should be able to quickly determine where the oil is leaking from.

Fortunately the seals are cheap and can be replaced without splitting the tractor. You will however need to drop the belly pump to get at 'em.

Check the battery with a vom befroe starting and after starting.. compair values.. if voltage goes up.. you are charging.. if voltage drops.. you are discharging. New amp gauge is 9$ if you want to verify it...
