I fired up the old MD yesterday and it ran fine on the gas side. When switched to diesel I let it idle for a few minutes. When I gave it a little throttle There was a loud rap" rap" rap" on the injector side of the engine, up high towards the head. Scared the puddin right out of me. Its never done it before. I shut it off as quick as I could. I then started it a few minutes later the same way, let it idle on diesel longer. I took it out and worked it with a disc and no more knock. I cant figure it out. Anyone ever had this happen? What the heck is it?!! Sorry for the long post. Andy

Andy, This happened to me once on my 450D when the float/needle valve must have stuck open in the carburetor after switching to diesel cycle. Closing off the gas valve at the tank stopped the pinging. It's only done this once in the last 2 years. I told this to an IH mechcanic and he said he saw the same thing happen to an MD many years ago. The fix is to replace the needle valve and seat. Turn off the gas and if the pinging stops, thats your problem. It does ping very loud.

What you were hearing was preinjection knock as you did not let it run on the gas side long enough they will do this if not warmed up enough and the injection pump timming is up on the advance side and she has a bit more fuel turned to it above stock setting . You would not have wanted to be around my old 450 D when i lit her up as i had the pump timming set up and the fuel turned to her and if i did not darn near run a whole tank of gas thru it on the start up she would hammer hard . Just give her more gas run time and it will be fine .

Many instant knocks that just go away are chunks of carbon that come loose and wedge between the piston and Cylinder head. They only do harm if sufficient to crack/dent the piston, or bend a rod. If carbon deposit breakup is what happened, you probably are in the clear. Diesels are ment to be worked hard. They are like an athelete, if they aren't working out they suffer. Lets hope it was what i believe it to be. Keep an ear out. JimN

Hey fellas, thanks for the good news!! I was worried sick!! I will definetly let it warm up longer on the gas side. I wanted to get her good and hot as it hadnt been run that way for a long time. It sure ran good after awhile and seemed to clear up on the miss it had, now if I could just stop the liquid gold leaks I will feel even better. Thanks again, Andy
