I am looking at a 5 ton fertilizer/ lime spreader. I know most people get the local coop to spread but we are organic and it's more complicated than that. Currently I have an H, 300U, and two Super C's. I also have a 50hp Modern McCormick Compact ( 4500lb). Can anyone with experience give me an idea on on what I need to use to pull that much spreader?? Gosh darn, will i need a bigger farmall? :)

Thanks guys. My big field is relatively flat but my other fields are rolling. It sounds like I need a little more grunt to do it and I bet the 300U is too light. Hmmm, a 400 or 450 would look good next to the others...
Thanks guys

Charley: There is a guy not far from me, I see him going with an 8 ton spreader behind his Super M. I've only seen him on level ground, but any time I've watched he's hiking along in 3rd gear. He's got that SM in great working order.

I don't know these folks, but they do have modern much larger tractors on the farm. The guy running the SM is my age or older, he takes the SM to shows. I suspect the spreading is annual exercise for the SM and pop as well. He certainly enjoys putting that SM through it's paces.

I pulled a 2 ton with my Farmall 130 back 40 years ago. The item I had to watch for was loosing traction when fertilizer all got to the back at less than half load. The spreader I had was a British built Atkinson, single axle, with a 6' belt taking material to fans at back. I just had to be careful to spread hills, loose or soft soil when I still close to full load.

I pull our 5 ton spreader with the Super H. Up the hills just shift her down to second. If your spreader isn't ballanced the best be careful, they can get REAL light in the front end of the tractor!

we have alway run the fertilize spreader with a 706 and when full it will take about all she has in soft ground in 1st high but when it gets down ya could pullin with a h . Now i have seen times that 145 horse on one in a soft spot is not enough pony power with duals as i have had to go help a neighbor that put one in because he ran out of power and stalled the tractor and once foward movement stopped it started the downward movement and it took two tractors to get one tractor and one full spreader out.

Charlie,

I've pulled a 6-ton Farmhand spreader with the H. Clear down in low gear, it will work the snot out of 'er, but it can be done.

My H had the Super kit in it (think that makes 'em about 27 horse) and I was on pool-table level ground.
