I'm posting this here as a follow-up to my original post from last week:

Wayne (and everyone),

On Saturday I started the C and limped it over to the shop where I could take a look at it. I removed the plugs, and all looked good except #4 which was wet (obviously not firing). So I replaced #4 with a new plug.

Started and it ran fine. I'm thinking... "whoa this is too easy".. so a couple hours later I began grading the driveway. After about 10 minutes of work it began stumbling again as before.

So I checked compression on #4. 120 pounds (sigh of relief)

Thinking that I had an ignition problem, I pulled the distributor cap. Above is what I found.

Corrosion on the terminals. And "dirt" on the inside of the cap - most of which was nearest the terminal for #4. So I cleaned it all up, applied some dielectric grease and... VOILA - it runs PERFECT.

It is amazing. I wanted to be sure and post what I found. It is like having a new tractor.

Oh and Wayne - I am about 45 minutes from Madison, WI.

You still may find that you have done a temp. fix. Distutor caps do wear out and should be replaced about every other time you replace the points and condenser, along with the rotor.

Glad you found a simple solution- that's always good!

Also glad to hear you didn't have a vacuum leak. Most are unaware that vacuum that has leaked out of older engines is building up in the upper atmosphere at an alarming rate and is enlarging the hole in the bzone layer. This "hole" doesnt really do anything but alert scientists in the northern hemisphere have noted a trend of warming in the summers and cooling in the winters they think might be linked to vacuum buildup. They think the vacuum also may be sucking up all light once a day, causing a phenomenon they've named "night"...

This is a component of the darkon theory of radiation. Cut a dead flash "light" battery in half, what you get is black. The "light" is actually sucking darkness from the surrounding area. When dead, it is full of dark.
