I bought a Cub yesterday and of coursem the generator isn't making juice...or so it appears. I have been to the archives and read a bit there. But could some of you tell me how to troubleshoot this without a ton of detail? Just the first things to look at for a possible cause. Thanks.

Menfolks,
Thanks for the advice.....I'll try to look it over tomorrow. The tractor is supposedly a '49 model..but I haven't run the serial number yet. It does have a voltage regulator..sits in front of the coil with 3 leads on the side...field and batt and something else. The most obvious sign there is no current from the generator is, the engine dies when the cable is pulled and the ammeter shows a constant negative reading when running. The hood is stuck to the gas tank...probably by paint. I had just a few minutes this evening to look at things and seen right quick the whole top was going to require removing to get to the generator. No big deal, just an inconvenience. I think what bothers most when fooling with these old tractors is all the damned Rube Goldberging done to them over the last 50+ years!

Mark - Punch below. At the lower right corner of the page find a pair generator troubleshooting flow charts that may help. One chart (#16) is for cutout equipped (earlier) tractors; the other (#15)is for a later, voltage regulator equipped tractors.

Simply pick whichever applies chart to your Cub then follow it through step by step.

If it has a 3 or 4 terminal regulator, check for battery voltage at the BAT terminal with engine running. If voltage is present, check for voltage at the GEN or ARM terminal. If no voltage at these points, try grounding the field terminal at the generator & see if the ammeter shows charge. If ammeter shows charge, remove the regulator cover & using a points file or fine abrasive cloth, clean the contacts on the field " relay"[ the one with the fine wire on it]. The armature " relay" has heavier wire & fewer turns on it. If there is no voltage at the BAT terminal, do some troubleshooting to see why voltage isn't present.

Is this a starter/generator or just a generator? Do you have a regulator or a charge relay? Confused yet?? I had the same problems with my charging system. Pull the cover off of the regulator if it has only one coil it is a relay, two and it is a voltage regulator. Start the tractor with the cover off and see if the coil pulls down if not you may need a new reg these normally come with all the instructions you'll need. If this doesn't help send me an e-mail and I'll dig in my books.
