Slightly bummed out....

I stopped at my favorite ag equipment salvage yard today to find an air cleaner assembly for my W-4, and a fuel filter can for the 706D. A couple of years back they changed the name of the place and became much more active in scrap metal, rather than salvage. Translation: over half of their "inventory" is gone- crushed and shipped out. It seemed like what is left was pretty much all picked through. Had a hard time finding an air cleaner for an H (W-4). You"d think that would be an easy part to find. Never did find any 06 filter cans- all the 06 stuff was down to the bones.

Then on the way home, I passed a place that always had a very rusty old Farmall (H, I think) with a broken wheel hub sitting in the yard. I never intended to buy it or anything. It looked pretty rough and I can"t save every old Farmall, but I always would look for it when I"d go past. You know, the same way you know about every piece of junk sitting around within a 30 mile radius of your house. Anyway, now it"s gone too. Presumably scrapped.

I just kind of hate to see that. I"m a "junk" kind of guy. I don"t want to buy all my parts off of e-bay. and pay more in shipping than I paid for the part.
Just my rant du jour!
Paul

I live in Central Mo. with a scrap yard about 7 miles away. Scrap prices are high enough and we had a mild winter. every fence row for 30 miles is getting hauled off. This outfit will absolutely NOT sell you anything. Says there computer system is not set up for sales. If you find something and beg and talk real good they will trade you an equal amount of scrap.

I saw equipment being cut up that was much newer and less worn than what I am still using. Pretty sad

Salvage yards that won"t sell anything out have always bugged me. There is a yard not too far from me that I bought a LOT of good stuff from over the years for cheap. (A solid Stainless steel semi tank for $300 that I have used to haul manure for several years) New management got in there and now they will sell you stuff, but at 2-3 times scrap prices. Others, as you said, won"t sell anything out.
I"d rather see those tractors in the fence row yet rather than being scrapped.

I just brought home an H that I'd sell cheap. It runs but sounds like a noisy bearing in the transmission. I'm not gonna fix it. (like in if I tear it apart I sure ain't putting it back together)

I like the picture there! It says it all.

Too bad you don"t live a bit closer to me. I"m always open to another red (or gray) tractor, especially if it"s cheap. It can"t be that hard to change out a tranny bearing or two. I like doing that kind of stuff anyway, it"s just that I never have time. Too busy trying to keep the "business equipment" running.
Maybe you"d like to vacation over this way? See a Great Lake or two..... .

Don't be bummed Paul. I can make you jealous and tell you that there are a couple of junk yards around here that still have the first "junkers" that the owner bought 40 years ago. I found a fellow with no less than 4 junkers W6's in his yard, friend of a friend. He wants them parted out, and his prices are cheap. Hub and axle and axle housing for my 6, $50.00, and he will remove it. I'd drag a whole carcus home, but it's still cool here, no heat in the dog house..... ....

You know that you can never have too many W-6s. Go on and bring a couple home at that price. Tell your wife I said you could! ;>)

Yeah, I hate to see tractors with many perfectly good parts to be scrapped. It"s really sad to think of the life the machine had and all the history it went through, only to be turned into useless scrap. What a shame!!

I hate to think of what will become of my bunch of old iron after I can no longer care for it. I don"t have any kids to pass it down to. Even if I did, they"d probably just sell the stuff anyway. I have a tractor that my dad has owned since the early fifties. What do I do, will it to a nephew who doesn"t know or care about it?
Ah, well, I"m still young yet. Hopefully I"ll be around for a while yet.
