Drain on battery - help

YTers,

I think I have a problem with my Super C.

I have the battery on charge (original 6v system). So it is charging at about 2 amps, and out of curiosity I pulled the ignition switch out. The charge went up to 4 amps. Should it do that? Or do I have a short somewhere?

Thanks for any ideas.

Bill

Think about it, you turn it on and if doesn't draw more amps then you have a problem but since it does draw more amps sounds like all is well. If you do the same thing on any car or truck it will also do the same thing.

Bill, I dont think you have a short either. With the Ignition ON and assuming the points are closed as they usually are when shes setting, the coil could draw 3 amps or more out of the battery which is why the charger tries to pump more amps in.

Bill - Not to worry....that's perfectly normal!

What's happening is when you turn on the ignition it draws a couple amps from the battery. And when the battery charger is connected it senses this, then increases the current it sends to the battery to compensate for it.

Thus the extra couple amps that shows on the charger's ammeter when the ign switch is pulled out.
