I found a H beside the road with a for sale sign on it and bought it for $300.00. The girl said that they never could start it. When I got her home, I put a new sediment bowl on and blew out the gas line and put a new battery in her, the tank doesn't look too bad. I turned her over a few times and she hit. I checked the points and was getting spark, I decided to put a set of plugs in her and that is when I noticed that the first piston was up where the plug hole was. I turned the motor over and noticed that three pistons were moving. but the front one was up as far as it would go and evidently stuck there! I finally got her running on three cylinders {sounded a little like an old john deere}. Would you tear her down and put a connecting rod in her or "part her out?"

I think you paid way to much for it if you have to do all that work.

Big Little, "all that work" is therapy for me...I sell insurance for a living and sit behind a desk for 8 hrs.. I was raised on a farm and have always had a tractor and some acreage. Buying a tractor for $300.oo is fun, if you can repair it cheap and resale it or if it can't be repaired and you have to part it out, it was still fun. At $300.oo, I think I will come out either way as I don't count my time working on it because I enjoy it.

check out the crank, if the journal is not banged to hell, then try a new cylinder set.

If the rest of the tractor is sound, then by all means save her from the scrap man!

I would first pull the pan and look at the crank and see how bad it might be then go from there. I would almost bet the rod broke and also spun a bearing and the picton ended up at the top of the cylinder instead of going out the side of the block like most of them do.
