Fixed the Single Wire Batt Drain

I got a 30amp, fog light relay and put the open contacts across the charge circuit. I then wired the relay coil to the ignition circuit. So, when you turn on the power to the coil, the relay closes and turns on the charging system. Shut the tractor off, and the charge circuit opens, protecting the battery. I case you're wondering, I did this on a Super M that had been converted to 12 volt and was having problems with the single wire alt draining the battery down. Email's open if you want more details.

I wouldnt expect that relay to last too long.

When you shut the ignition off, and the relay opens, you are breaking the circuit from the alternator to the battery. As BobM advised you the other day, that is NEVER a good idea. One day, when the alternator is charging heavily to recharge a low battery, and you do that, the resulting voltage surge will "kill" the internal regulator, and/or the rectifier, and/or the diode trio.

Why make it so difficult? BobM, with his diagrams, has shown how to wire up a STANDARD 10SI alternator, which is typically even less costly than the goofy one-wire units.

The standard 3-wire alternators will begin charging at a low speed, and will not drain the battery, as some one-wire units do.

A standard alternator, and a diode are CHEAP to buy, and are simple to connect, and use. WHY do you guys persist with the troublesome one-wire units????

All you need is the alternator, some simple connections, and a diode (1N5008) in the lead from the #1 "switched excite" terminal to the ignition swith.

(If desired, a # 194 lamp will work equally well in place of the diode... Use a dash-mounted "idiot light", or simply mount a side marker light out of sight.)

Third Party Image

That's it, a diode for about a buck, and no need for a $$ relay, and heavy wire and terminals to connect the relay up.

I can see how this will work well for a distributor ignition, but what if I have a magneto? I would have to add a switch somewhere. I normally pull the battery cables when I park the tractor for over night or longer, so the drain is not an issue for me. I think the one-wire alternator would make more sense in my application.

You can use a DPDT switch to "kill" the mag, and "excite" the alternator, OR you can use an oil pressure switch to operate the "excite" line to the alternator, per BobM's diagram.

Or, you can convince yourself the goofy "one-wire" alternator is the best thing since sliced bread, which seems to be the popular thing to do around here!

What's the source for the relay??
