I have Famall M that overheats after about 15 minutes. Can't find thermostat. Would it overheat if it didn't have a thermostat? I looked where I thought the termostat should be (I took off the gooseneck that is above the fan bolted to the head) and there was nothing there.

Radiator has got to be clogged. That is the only time I ever saw an M overheat.

Couple of ideas. Remove the radiator cap and start the engine. Without a thermostat, there will be a good flow of coolant constantly. If you see bubbles flowing in your coolant, you may have a blown head gasket or cracked head. After the engine warms up, you can check the actual temp with a thermometer just to make sure you don't have a bad gauge.

I had the exact same problem with my '47 M last year, and it turned out to be a plugged radiator. I had it "boiled out" at a radiator shop, but the tubes were so thin it leaked badly after I re-installed it, even though I was extremely careful with it. The radiator shop gave me a credit for the $70 repair job and sold me a brand new radiator for another $180. I also installed new hoses and gaskets, since I had it all apart. It's worked perfectly ever since.

The M is not a tractor that typically overheats. I have run our superM in the blistering heat all day under load and the temperature nerver goes above 180 degrees. Dad put a new radiator core in it a few years ago and it works flawlessly. Unless you have a cracked head or blown head gasket I would guess a new radiator or core is in your future. Good luck.

Well if the fan belt is tight and you have a full cooling system it shouldn't over heat. I'd spray out the radiator and also flush the cooling system. I'd drain it, the refill with vinagar and run it till hot. Let it cool and then back flush it with a garden hose. I made an adaptor that goes in to the block drain. Turn on the water and walk away for a couple hours with the cap off and let it do its thing. The refill and see if that helps. Your cooling system is probably full of rust and lime.

Should not overheat without a thermostat. You are looking in the right place for your thermostat. Many thermostats were just removed, no chance of overheating then. If your rad is full of antifreeze, chances are that your rad is plugged. I'd pull the rad and take it to a rad shop or replace it.

it should not overheat with no thermostat. i would check too see if radiator fins are plug or power flush the entire cooling system. would be my two ideas.

If the thermostat is gone the oposite would be true. It should run cold.
I suspect water pump or the rad is plugged up.
