This summer Im going to tackle the brakes on my 45 farmall H. I was told it is an easy job. Im planning on just changing the bands. Does anyone knows a good sight you can buy bands at a resonable price, and any advise before attempting this project. All help is appreciated. Thank You

Place a small amount of grease in the hole where the brake pivot goes into the transmission housing and be sure the brake pivot works freely in the cover. Oil the area well and let the excess drip off before installing the new bands.
After installing the bands & getting the pedal free-play to about 1", apply the brakes firmly, lock them in place and adjust the setscrew on the bottom side of the cover. (helps to loosen & re-thread any adjustable parts BEFORE re-assembly) Loosen the jam nut, turn the set screw in until it touches the brake band, back out 1/2 turn & lock the jam nut. This helps prevent the brake from dragging, premature wear, and overheating.

It is a "fairly simple" job, if all goes well and none of the bolts are rusted in place. Are the seals leaking? Reasonable is a variable term. Brake bands fo an H are widely available and cheaper than an engine rebuild kit.

No, I havent noticed anything leaking. I did take the left side cover off. There was alot of dirt inside. Heres a dumb question. Are both bands on the left side? I dont recall now if Ive seen a cover on the right side.

There is a band on either side. You might not notice anything leaking until you get the band off. If the seal is bad, the band will be soaked with grease.

I have found that aftermarket bands are thinner than IH, and I have had trouble with them breaking. Others here do not seem to have that problem. I bought an IH replacement band a couple weeks ago. It was $75 at the local dealer, but when I get to the end of the field, I would rather turn than go through the fence.

Once you install the new bands, you will have to adjust them. The operator's manual gives the procedure. When I adjusted mine, the covers would get warm when I was driving the tractor and I had to loosen the adjusters another 1/4 turn.
