Crank bearing caps

I had a cracked cylinder wall on a H, and found a salvage yard block to replace it. Finally got it back from machine shop with new sleeves, cam bearings and started putting it back together on Saturday. I thought it would be best to use the crank bearing caps that were with the "new" block rather than using the caps that went with the original block. It did not work very well that way-the center and rear bearing would bind the crank up before the bolts were tightened. After several attempts I wound up with the front cap from the old block and the center and rear caps from the new block and the crank will now turn with the bolts tightened. I haven't torqued them in yet or checked clearance. Plan to do that today. My concern at this point is whether mixing caps will cause grief later. Thanks-John

You MUST use the same bearing caps that came with the block because they are line-bored to size and cannot interchange with another engine or different bearing on the same block.
Connecting rod caps are the same. That is why they are numbered; so they can be put back where they belong.

I would use the caps that came with the block. On my H, the caps had to be seated very carefully to let the crank turn easily.

I would check with your local machine shop to see if those main bearing caps from your new block needs to be lined bored. Hal

Best to use the caps that was on the block. The block needs to have the mains aligned bored. One bore, or more is out of measurement. I found a M block that was like that, The center main was .010 tighter than the front and rear bores. Its worth the time and $$. JMHO, Chad
