Belt Pulley Questions

When I bought my '53 Super M last fall at an auction, I didn't have a belt pulley. I found one advertised in the YT Classifieds that came off an M, and I bought it. Anyone have any tips for cleaning it up? The face of the pulley is a fiber-like, hard rubber-type material that seems to be coated with greasy dirt or residue that may have come from running a belt. It has a few small nicks here and there, and in places shows the seams in the material that go around the circumference of the face. The seams are tight, but they're visible. It also has red paint showing through in places, so I assume the face was painted red. I don't plan to run a belt with it, just want the pulley to look clean. The face shouldn't be painted red, should it? The metal parts, yes, but not the face. I seem to remember them starting out black when new but then going to dark grayish/brown through use. Any tips, guys? Thanks!
David

The pulleys are made of laminated paper. I use clear white shellac to seal them.

Howard,
Thanks for responding. Laminated paper, huh? You wouldn't think that would hold up to wear and tear, but obviously it does. Before coating with the shellac, how would you clean one up? Would you scrape it, brush it or what? I imagine you might want to avoid too much in the way of chemical cheaners, or you might destroy that laminated surface. Would that be right? Thanks.
David

All i did to clean mine was run the pully and held some med grade sand paper on a block against it lightly while it spun. Cleaned right up nice.
