656 Tach Reading Off

Ever since we bought a new 656 2 years ago the tach doesnt seem to read correctly. I will crank the tractor wide open, and the tach is still below pto speed, however my ear says it is above pto speed. Is there something in these that need calibrated, or is there a gear that can be changed out like in a speedometer?
Thanks
Mike

Mike: If you were new to a 656 as recently as two years ago, I can understand it sounding slow. 1800 rpm is standard 540 pto speed and the tractor will be most likely governed at 2000. That is quite slow compared to most of the engines around farm tractor world since 1980.

Hook it up to the baler and count the strokes of plunger per min. That will give you a good idea. That is how we did the old 300 before the days of tach's.

We are new to this 656. Have had a 656 for 10 years. When we put this 656 on the baler and cranked it open to where the baler ran like it should the tach wasnt anywhere near pto speed. I will have to count the strokes just to be sure.

Most places that restore antique auto guages/tachs/speedometers will also do the same for tractors, but it's pricey. I know of at least one or two if you need the phone numbers. I'd do as "vet" says and make sure you need it calibrated first.

Well as of today i have know idea as to where to send one to get checked and as far as changing a gear NO , first i would put a digital on it to see if it is running what RPM's as hearing is not a good tach . Back some time ago there was a place in youngstown that would calibrate a tach or speedo but they have long since gone out of business as we use to send speedo's in to be checked and cal. as they did the police cars and State patrol car. and if you wanted the littel pice of paper that stated that your speedometer was certified and calibrated they would do it .
