Trying to get a little information before I try to start my H should be ready by next weekend.Just wanted to get some oil recommendations and also would like to know where to set my spark timing at full throttle. Dont know if it makes a difference but the serial #is FBH4015.Didnt know if timing changed any between year models. And as far as the engine oil goes I just completely overhauled the engine would like to know what weight to use and how long should I run it before I change the oil the first time and how often after that.Any help is appreciated as always thanks RIVER BOTTOM FARMER

Doug: It's 15-40 diesel grade all the way for me. I've used it in everything from 1066 to my 4 cycle lawn mower. By the way the 4 cycle lawn mower is 31 years old and until two years ago it mowed 1/2 acre every year. The only thing original on the mower is the engine.

I've had exceptional service with this oil, 10,000 hours between rebuilds was the norm for diesels, 5,000 on gas tractors, of ten V8 GM in car or trucks nothing under 300,000 miles. I can't say anything but good about this oil. In the early days starting in the mid 60 I used 30 in summer and 20 in winter. Then about 1980 two of my friends in the forestry busines advised me thay were using 15-40 and starting at temps down to -25F most mornings, and miles from civilization. These guys were also putting 3,000 to 4,000 hours per year on 6 cylinder Cummins, Cat and Deere diesels.

I wouldn't even consider anything else. I doesn't matter what brand either, as long as it's top grade low ash diesel motor oil.

As far as the oil goes put in the 30 weight Low ash and be done with it the 10W"s are not ment for heavy duty applacation as these old engines are not made to the close tolarences as the newere stuff and the 10W30-40 are car - pickup oils and i know there are the guys that run to Wally world and buy it by the case and run it there tractors but it is not a HD motor oil plain and simple Heck i don"t even run that stuff in my owen pickup in the winter it get a 15W 40 and for summer it gets 20 W50 that was when i was running a gasser one ton pullen a 28 fooot gooseneck and after 287000 miles on that old 460 ford that was never run any harder then 7000 RPM and never hauled more the one 1066 and one 806 all at the same time from Ill to Ohio and the only time it got a chance to catch it"s breath was when i had to put gas in it and was running with the big boys at 75 -85 mph and if the idiots at Donnel ford would not have messed up the heads try to put new exhaust manifolds on it the heads would have never been off that engine as at a 105000 miles you could still see the cross hatch in the cylinder and the head mechanic asked me what type of oil i ran in it as they had never seen and engine so clean on the inside and just like my Cummins it get what Cummins says to run in it Shell Rotilla 15W40 the ford got 20W50 Castrol and believe me that ford got the bag run off it as in the spring running to the sales and bringing tractors and equipment home most weeks it had two oil changes per week as it was seen 6000 to 7000 a week in running So I H sayes to use the 30 weight then that is what they get .

I am not those guys, and they are very knowledgable.
I would use a good quality (brand name) 20w oil in the engine for about 15 hours, then change the filter and oil to a 10w 40 multi viscosity (brand name). Multi viscosity oils are as thin as the lower number when cool, and never get thinner than the larger number when hot (operating temp). THey are one of the main reasons engines are lasting as long as they do. Vary the load on the engine during that run in period. Not above 3/4 throttle, or 3/4 load, for the first hour but all over the range and load after that. Never let it run at one speed for very long.
