Model A Farmall question

I just looked at model "A" belonging to a friend's grandfather. They don't know much about tractors and wanted to know if it could be updated with a starter. I'm an old AC fan so Farmall isn't exactly my field. But when I got there I found a very intact 1940 tractor with no "mounting hole" for a starter or a ring gear on the flywheel. I'm fairly sure I've seen "A" model Farmalls with electric starter before. Can anyone tell me if I could take an old lawn mower combo starter/generator with a pulley on it and mount on the left side to start it using the crankshaft pulley? Not sure if a belt would hold. Any other ideas? I know if it were mine I'd leave it as is. Thanks in advance for any info,
Randy

Starter -Gen unit work? Try a unit for a 12hp Cub Cadet and see if it works. The starter needs to be able to power through the compression of a single cylinder to get going, a 4 cylinder is only slightly more drag than the single of 1/4 engine total displacement. Note that first Dodge cars had the starter-gen unit on what amounted to a Ford model T engine, IHC Regular and early F20s had a similar unit as aftermarket available, Delco parts manual from 1960s on the sarter-gen units had short listing for 25 to 40 hp utility engines use noted up to 160+ inch flathead Continentals as using larger generator than Cub/Simplicity, was basicly a 40amp truck generator, mostly same part numbers with the switch/regulater box. I think Leece-Neville(sic) had a starter-gen unit also using basicly 40amp high output generator, not sure on this one, limited option for Kaiser Jeeps for special uses. Check a electrical rebuilder shop and see what they show in catalogs/parts books- they might have a large Delco or Bosch set in catalog that is still currently available. RN .

The early (1939-1940)modles didn't come with mounting hole for starter if it wasn't equipped with a starter from the factory. You should be able to buy a ring gear but the torque tube would have to be replaced. This tractor doesn't have a choke rod either I'll bet. This would be a rare enough tractor that I would keep it as is. Dave.

The starter/genny probably wouldn't work. What it needs is a differant torque tube and a flywheel with a ring gear and of course a starter. I think the parts from a B would also work. And if they would I have all those parts out in the part file. or parts row which ever you want to call it.
