What do I need for a trailer? I would like to stay away from a gooseneck type. The biggest thing that I would probably haul is a Farmall 400. What's the max width between fenders that a person can get?

Thanks in advance.

I have a 25 foot gooseneck with the deck over the wheels, I've hauled two 400's on it and it pulls beutiful, I used to own a bumper pull and would never go back.

How about the deck-over trailers? That's what I want to get... A 108"x18ft with dual 5000lb axles. Should be plenty for an M/400/450, even a 560.

I've been shopping around, and the best you can get in a low trailer is about 7 feet between the fender wells. You can fit an H/300/350 with the wheels slid in, but it's a royal PITA to haul anything bigger, because you have to flip one of the wheels over so it's dished in... The tractor needs to be backed on for proper weight distribution on a bumper pull trailer.

"The tractor needs to be backed on for proper weight distribution on a bumper pull trailer." I disagree, at least for car trailers, I have never pulled a deck over. I have never hauled anything bigger than a Super H, but the best weight distribution is when driven on frontwards. I did put an H on backwards once, simply because I was not used to the clutch and felt safer loading it rear first. The front wheels were barely on the trailer. Any further up and there was too much weight on the rear of the truck. With a load equalizing hitch that might change.

The new deal on the bumper pull 8 foot trailers is "drive over fenders". They are low and HEAVY and braced so you can drive tractor right over them.

I have a 18ft +2 (beaver tail) bumper pull trailer rated at 9000lbs gross weight so that's about 7000lbs capacity... I believe the width is 84" between the fenders... It's a nice trailer that's low to the ground... I've hauled a SMTA (too wide to fit between the fenders-a slloooww 20miles) and MV (1300 miles) which barely fit...

Anyway. I would reccommend a flat deck bumper pull or a goose neck if you're hauling a 400... then you don't have to mess with the rear tire width...

With a car trailer, you have to have the wheels dished in. As to axles you need at least one size up from the common 3500 lb axles, I believe that is 5000 lbs each. A deck over trailer would be better, but with the car trailer, loading is easier. A properly placed load on a bumper pull trailer will NOT sway -- I have done it many times. They are also lighter than a gooseneck, but do have weight limitations as to load. Get a load equalizing hitch, which will distribute the load between truck and trailer and prevent your truck from squatting. With a 10000 lb GVW trailer and a 5500-6000 lb 400, you need a truck capable of SAFELY pulling 10000 lbs, meaning at least a 3/4 ton.

If you are going to go bumper type, be sure to have a good enough hitch on the pickup and also a darn good sway control. I've never pulled a bumper hitch that didn't sway.

Gooseneck, on the other hand, you can go 80 mph and they don't sway.

Del,
It depends on what rims you have on the 400. I have a 450D with the 2 adjustmet rings on the rims. It goes on my 20' trailer between the fenders just fine. I also have a Super M I got from dad's estate. It has only one ring on the rim...and I have to turn one wheel around to haul it anywhere.
I also have a 20' gooseneck...and would rather pull it than any trailer I have. The thing is easier to balance the weight, it turns much sharper and is jut a lot easier to move in a tight place.
In fact...I am thinking about getting rid of the 20" bumper pull. It is just too much weight on the rear end of the truck when empty.
My 2 cents.....

What you want is an 8 X 18 flat deck on 15" bias 8 ply tires. Keep your height down, my fenders are about 3 inches above the deck and heavy enough to drive on. the bigger gooseneck trailers pull too hard and use too much fuel. I just bought a new 25 footer and hate it.

You will not find a trailer with enough space between the fenders to fit your 400 unless you turn the rear wheels inside out on the 400. Bumper hitch type trailers are availabe in a high deck configuration, but I have to agree with tractorvet on this one, once you have owned and used a gooseneck, you will never want anything else.

yes they do make a bumper pull in a high deck configuration but you cant pull it with a 3/4 ton truck and anythig on it, its made for a ton truck or more, I had one and first time I pulledwith it was the last, traded it for a gooseneck and will never look back, I traded to the the high deck bumper pull becaus I started hauling bigger stuff than my 20 foot car hauler wanted to handle, I think it was 78" or so between wells,

After having a bumper pull for years then updating to a goose neck there ain't no way in Hello that i waould ever even think of going back they handel sooooo o much better and you would not be sorry for going that route and as far as size a 20 +4-5 would be just about wright behind a 3/4 ton pick up and nothing less to haul a 400 . And this comes from someone that has done a bunch of tractor haulen.
