Need a quick lesson in splitting a 1949 H. Some of the bolts are in plain sight, like on the rails, but there are some that seem to be put in from the backside {from the bell housing to the block or to the metal plate that sits between the engine and the bellhousing.] How do you get these out,how many are there? Help me out here until the manual arrives. Thanks.

Funny you should ask. I am trying to figure out how to replace the clutch in a Super H I just bought. I hope it works the same way as a regular H. I remember helping my dad with our H and you can definately remove the clutch on those by going in through the pump opening. There are 6 bolts I think. You take out every other one, then screw those in holes and compress the pressure plate. With everyhting else in the way removed it will come out. At least it did in 1992 according to the notes my dad left in our "IT" service manual. His notes also said it freezing rain that Jan. day. Sure miss him.

2 bolts on the inside of the casting; 1 behind the starter (remove starter) and 1 above the flywheel on the opposite side. Remove the belly pump to get at this one. A socket & 6"-10" extension will get the job done.
As some others have asked, why split the "H"?

You have to remove the starter and there are two bolts inside the cavity that have to be removed. One is a challenge to reach.

Just curious, but why are you splitting the tractor? You can do most things to the H without splitting it.

H neede new ringgear and flywheel reground. Also, will probably replace clutch and rear crankshaft seal. Is there another way?

You have to split for the ring gear and to remove the flywheel.

Does it need to be split to put in a new clutch and throw-out bearing?

No, drop the belly pump and go to work. The H and M do not have to be split to change the clutch out.

Johann,

Its been a number of years since I split one so I'm going by memory.

As I reacall there is one bolt in thru the starter hole and two at the bottom that are accessed from inside the pump cavity.

Perhaps someone with more info will come on here and help ya out a little better.

Allan
