I use the muratic acid as well and made a mounting bracket where I can strap it on the end of my cement mixer and let her go. When done I use diesel fuel after rising to get some lube back in the metal. It seems to work for me. JIM in ILL.

I have by far had the best luck removing the tank and taking it to the engine shop and having it hot tanked. It costs you $30 and comes back as good as new, not to mention that you don't have the hassle of putting together a setup to do it yourself. I've done two tanks in this manner and wouldn't have it any other way.

Good luck!

The methods Thomas Windsor describes are methods that Ive used to get rust out of fuel tanks I have even put large ball bearings and even rocks in them and shook them around to beat the rust losse and washed out with kerosene. There is an excellent fuel tank sealer that will prevent further rusting on the POR 15 products website called U.S. standard fuel tank sealer and if you clean your tank and use this sealer you will completely remedy your problem. Let me know how it turns out..... RIVER BOTTOM FARMER

Didn't get a chance to use it on my M before I sold it, but there is product from por-15 that my neighbor said works really well. Attached is a link to the product.

1. Muratic acid will definately do it. a couple gallons I would guess for such a large tank. Let it sit for couple hours, then rotate, then sit, then rotate, etc. Then put acid back in container. Mix up soda and water and put it in the tank and nutralize the acid. The air dry it. The problem is that the acid takes "all" of the oils out of the metal and it will rust again over night. You must get some oil back into the metal or get it dry and coat it with slosh and sealer to keep it from immediately rusting again.

2. On the other hand, a length of chain in the tank and shake rattle and roll it to knock it loose. Flush it out and coat the inside of the tank with the available slosh and sealers.

Sorry, I made some assumptions that I should not have.

Keep in mind that you are dealing with a pretty strong acid. Wear eye protection and protect your hands. It will burn skin on contact. Make sure you pour the acid back into sealed containers and store them safely. Have a little soda and water mixed up and available just in case you get some on yourself.

Also it is a good idea to have the garden hose turned on and ready for use. If that acid ends up where you don't want it, immediately flush it with water from the hose. Other than that, the muriatic acid will give excellent results, much better than the scrap metal in the tank and rattle it around for awhile. The Farmall H and M gas tanks have a baffle in them, this baffle pretty much prevents any kind of hardware from getting behind it, thus you still have a large portion of the tank which did not get cleaned, and if any of the hardware did get behind the baffle, you may not be able to get it out. The acid is an excellent method. It is the method that I use.
