We are restoring an F-14 and are wondering what to do to it to make it run on kerosene. Do we need a special carburetor and/or a different manifold? We have a tank with two compartments.

No fuel line goes through the manifold. First you need the two tanks, shutters on the radiator, the correct manifold, and lines to change over from gas to kerosene.Ill assume you have all of that.CLose the shutters, start it up,let it run for a little bit to smooth out, move the lever on the manifold to HOT,let it run a few more minutes, turn off the gas and open the kerosene,do that pretty quick so as not to run the carb out of gas before the kerosene gets in there.Cover eyes, mouth and nose as the thing will smoke until it gets warm enough to run without smoking. Then shut off the kerosene, open up the gas,let it run a few minutes, move lever back to cold,(I run mine in the middle of an aftermarket manifold)shut off the gas and let it run until it cuts off.Go back in the house and wonder why you did that.Seriously,I wouldnt worry about it unless you just want to.I did it once on my 14,several times on my M,and when I can get it CHEAP I do it when I work my M sometimes.I remember Dad running a gas/kerosene/diesel mix in his M,now mine.Of course kerosene and diesel was a heck of alot cheaper then. Why he did that,I have no idea!

Thanks for the information. One concern was the engine. I was told that for the kerosene special they used a different compression ratio. So, let me try to understand this.
1. The gas line goes through the manifold?
2. Any engine will work?
3. The aftermarket manifolds will work?
4. Any carburetor will work?

My question is why would you want to? Kerosene isn't any cheaper than gasoline. I won't work for puttering around at shows becuase the engine has to be worked and kept very hot (almost boiling over) to vaporize the kerosene. And it will still dilute the engine oil and increase wear. And you still have to start it on gasoline to warm it up. They used kero in the old days because it was cheaper. It may be cool to try it once just to say you did, but running on kero all the time would be a pain in the....

I believe that the tractor we have was originally a kerosene special. We are considering donating it to a local museum and want it to be as original as possible. Personally, I do not see me plowing the back 40 running kerosene but for historical accuracy the kerosene setup would be closer to original.

I think the fuel line runs through the manifold to heat the fuel on the way to the carb so it will vaporize better. That would call for a special manifold.

You wouldn't have a closeup picture of this arrangement would you?
