Looking at a '67 hydro 656- tires worn, and it's a diesel. It has a fast hitch, widefront and shows 2500 hours...The guy wants $4500... is that a good price? I drove it last week, and the hydro seemed okay... If the hydro goes kaput... what's the repair cost? $5000? What if I take the unit out and send it in to be repaired? I'm just trying to make sure I will not be in for a surprise....

I see restored ones for $7000 to $8000 in the classifieds....are guys really paying that much for a 1960's tractor?

Agree with Rusty, going price in 4000 to 4500 range for decent one with decent tires that I notice. If the 2500 hours would happen to be actual(hard to belive)and it looks it the price is not bad for good running diesel.

You lucky duck!

Would you give me the sellers phone number? I'd like to "bump" your bid a little. :>)

Naw, quit worryin' 'bout it. Like the Vet says, ya might have to throw a set of tires on it, but what the heck, you already knew that.

Honestly, if it were me and if I were really lookin' fer one, I wouldn't be on here yakin' 'bout it. For $4500, I'd be loadin' that darned old tractor on my trailer and then I'd spill the beans to us guys later. :>)

Where else can you buy that kind of tractor for that kind of money? Get a move on, times a wastin'! :>)

Just my opinion,

Allan

The asking price may be a bit high due to the fact the tractor needs tires, but the seller is not too far off, and it is a diesel. Those tractors you see advertised for $7,000 to $8,000 most likely will never sell, not at that price anyhow. A seller can ask any price he wants, that doesn't mean the tractor will sell at that price.

I paid $3k for a gear drive 656D with the TA out, dual remotes, three point. Tires are decent, sheet metal excellent. The tractor shows 3000 hours, stills runs great and starts quickly with new glowplugs. I am about to split it and repair/replace the TA.

I would either shoot the guy a lowball cash offer, or keep on looking.

Regards, Tip

Yes you can drop 5000 in it in a heart beat plus labor along with other repais you could have even way more then that plus 800-900 bucks for tires and tubes . As for myself i would rather have a gear drive even if i have to replace the T/A , and yes some people are payen these high prices. A hydro is fine for some work but if you are thinking about doing tillage work with it it is not the tractor for that job . And just because it works ok cold things change when up at operating temps.

We would mainly use it for planting, light loader work, and some culitvation... so if I could get down to 3500... that may be a deal? I don't know if I could get this thing warmed up only on 10 acres...

It does not take long to get the hdy. up to operating temp. as when i am running a test on a hdy. system i can take hdy.oil from 60 degrees to150-160 in about 10-15 min. with out working the system to hard just by putting a 200-300 lbs load on the system with the FloRater and that is warmen up 15-20 gal of oil. If i push the system to a 1200lbs load it gets hot fast.

Well, I drove it for about 15 minutes down the highway in high and low, but it had already be been idling for 20min. I tried to put it under a load with the brakes, but the brakes were in dire need of some repair. It drove nice and straight anyway...

Your only real worry is if the hydro is on its way out. A rebuild will easily exceed the cost of the tractor, unless you can fix it on the cheap like Allen did with his. There's no "take it out and send it in," either... You're basically talking about half the rear end of the tractor... a little big for UPS.

You've just got to keep that in mind, is all. If you feel the hydro is in good shape, go for it. If you're afraid the hydro is shot, pass.
