What are the sounds of farming that makes you stop to look. Even though I don't own any green tractors I like to hear the old 2 cylinders at work. I also like to hear the sound of the 6 cylinder engines used in the W40 and 460/560. Those old engines stand out in a crowd.

1066, modified turbo, planed heads, running a straight pipe, turning enough hp that we'd slip the pto clutches running the chopper. start out in hi 3/lo, snag 4th, and time hi t/a just right she sounded real nice. The 1566 wasn't far behind but being slower didn't seem quite the same. That was turned up 3 times and would out-pto the 3788 (wish i had dyno info on it) but for extended intervals I preferred our 756 that had a little file work done on the throttle stops. She smoked like a good engine should. As for sounds I could do without, the turbo whine on our cih 4240 was unbearable, and accounts for the majority of the ringing in my ears.

The deafening roar of an open platform SP125 combine the necessity to be tuned to the total audio scheme so that failures (squeeks, rattles, pounding, or little hissing noises) can be detected within the roar. These things took 2 hours to grease, oil, and prep. (just long enough for the dew to burn off)

The whinning of the gears on farmall SC from when I was young and would ride in my grandpas lap and get to steer. My Dad still has it and it sounds the same today although now it just mows occasionally.

Two Ms plowing in the same field hearing the exhaust note harmonics, dampning and amplifing the sound as they gain or loose on each other as the soil changes.
rrrRRRRrrr rrrRRRRrrr gives me goosebumps.

ABSOLUTELY! My dad and I used to work with a Farmall M and a SM in the same field. The combination of harmonics and a slight doppler effect as they passed each other would give me goosebumps also!

Another great sound was that of a Farmall M and a 2-row mounted cornpicker.

My favorite combine sound was a neighbor's early '70s vintage 510 Massey with a Chevy (?) V8 in it.

I always liked the sound of my uncle's WD45 when he pushed it up to full throttle for the ride up the lane to the house for dinner. Must have had something to do with my grandma's cooking.

Our MTA has a nice deep throaty roar when it is warmed up and up to speed. Combined with the sound of our square baler it is music to my ears.

The deep monotone tenor of our 656 comined with the rhythmic beat of the baler is one of my favorites. I liked the sound from the wagon end of the deal because the hay bales would deaden the sound somewhat and you could almost fall asleep if it weren't for the fact that you were humping 80 lb bales in 90 degree heat.

The newer 6s have a nice throaty sound, but going back when I was a kid, my dad's M on the threshing machine was music as it had the rymthic sound as the pitchers unloaded the bundles.

When I was growing up I used to love to fall asleep to the guy"s out picking and also the sound of the dryer fans screaming around the area. Now all I hear is the trucks and the jake brakes as they drive down a 2 block strech to the glass plant. Iknow I messed up moving into town.

if that's the automotive glass plant on a major U.S. highway that I think you're talking about you didn't move to a very big town. Try someplace like dayton OH. it was bad enough that i made the 326 mile trek home for at least half the weekends for the better part of a year.

I like the distictive sound of my 826. A very close second is our Stieger st270 with a 3306 CAT with a staight pipe.
