Posted this in the wrong forum....reckon nobody reads Implement Alley! Anyway, here it is as follows:

Yanked the reservoir off the SA today..leaking like a seive. Found the leak(s) were from around what I call the control valves (bear with me here..I don't have a boook yet). The pistons themselves appear to be leak free. I pulled the valve stems out and find they have one O ring about midway. I then commenced to cleaning the housing....what a nasty mess. I yanked the top and bottom covers off, flushed the reservoir, then disassembled the lift arm mechanisms, cleaned and wire brushed everything. Now, my question is: what lies under the 'head'? There must be 20 bolts holding it on and being afraid of opening Pandora's Box, I set it aside until some of you veterans tell me what to do next/or expect to find when the bolts come off. I also wonder if the O rings are a special type, or can they be replaced by those found in a good NAPA store. Can the paper gaskets be replaced with silicone sealant? The thought of dropping 100 bucks for a kit that contains a palmful of O rings and 3 or 4 gaskets grates my teeth!

Just completed mine. GET THE KIT. Different sized O rings you will spend as much running for the parts and still will not have the gaskets. I took two and made one so I had plenty of parts around. When you pull the head there are passage ways for the fluid and different holes. I blew air in some of the holes to get the plungers out and they have O rings on them. Work in a clean area and be able to find fallen parts. I did mine outside in the middle of a 20x20 tarp. There are several springs inside but nothing that should go flying. Take it easy and use common sense and it is straight foreword. Remember the pressure that is inside the box when in use so I would think that reusing gaskets or silicon would not work. Clean up the mating surfaces. I had the book and did not find it that handy, but still get it. Also the leather covers for the upper arms and the rubber covers for the lower arms are not in the kit. You will need to secure the covers on the upper arms with wire. Around here the service manager and parts men are pretty helpful.

On the side under 4 bolts is a screen, clear or replace as needed. The plate on the bottom take off to clean gasket is in kit. And behind the head of the unit on the lower right side is a screw remove that and behind there is another small screen to clean or replace.

Jerry,
Thanks very much. I was afraid if I pulled the 'head' off, there might be retained pressure or compressed springs and detent balls and such that might fly everywhere. The leather boots on mine look completely serviceable and reusable. Where did you get your kit and what did it cost? I see them on ebay for $92 and change from some vendor here in Kentucky. The plungers (I have been told they are 'spool valves') only have one O ring and that has to be the culprit on mine...no other leaks evident anywhere. I'll spring for the kit and do it right....don't want to go here again! Thanks, Mark
