Oil Filter Gasket on Farmall A?

Yesterday I changed the oil on my A for the first time. There was a gasket with the new filter and a ring at the bottom of the base plate for the filter.

I closed it up tight with the filter and gasket and when I started it up there was oil leaking out of the filter.

Now when I took the old filter off there was no gasket but I assumed or guessed that the last person to change the oil was lucky or really strong.

Why do you suppose I had a leak with a gasket? I tightened the cover really tight before starting up the tractor.

Thanks,

Al Fitch

Oh, if I had to guess, I"d guess that the newer filters and their gaskets are not a perfect match for the 1944 A. The filter I put in was I believe a Fram filter.

Dave BN is right. Clean the old gasket out of the slot with something like an icepick or a sharp scribe.

I'll bet you didn't remove the old gasket. There should be an 1/8" deep (about) channel in the base where the new gasket fits. I had to pick my old one out with a sharpened small finish nail. They're hard to see, but I'm sure the old one is still in there. You just need to remove the new filter and canister and dig the old gasket out. Dave.

I guess I'm smarter then I thought! I took a pick and scraped the channel where a gasket would be. Nothing but paint and dirt came out.

I'll look again when I get back to my maintainence schedule.

Al

I had the exact same problem a year or two ago, and these guys set me straight with the old gasket being stuck in there. I thought I was scraping steel, same as you"re thinking. But, when the groove is clean, it is square shaped groove, not a "V" groove (like I thought mine was). REALLY pick in there, and the old pieces will come out.
