restoring 39 H everything is new or reconditioned
starts & runs beautifully as long as you hold the
starter switch down original with 6 volt positive
ground & generator with cutout thanks in advance
for the info

I think you need to check your ignition switch.
You should have voltage from the switch to your coil with battery ignition switch on. Should be a separate wire from switch to coil that has voltage at all times until switch is in the off position. It isn't much different than your car or truck. That's why Ford has had a problem with some of their vehicles catching fire when the ignition switch has voltage all the time. Hal

If someone has installed a ballast resistor for whatever reason, that could cause a problem.

IH, If its a battery powered coil ignition instead of a Magneto, I would wire the Ignition switches BAT input terminal to the load (NOT to battery/starter) side of the ammeter to serve as the input voltage source to the switch and coil. Neither side of the starter switch goes through the ammeter, so to get a true reading of amperage, loads like lights or ignition need to be powered up from the ammeters load (NOT to battery/starter) side terminal. Its possible to feed the ammeters input terminal off a starter switch on the big main input terminal where theres that big cable to the battery, but if its fed off the other (to starter) side of the starter switch, the loads (lights or ignition) only get power if the starter switch is depressed.

If its a battery powered coil ignition and not a mag and the coil is hot ONLY when the starter is engaged, I also wonder where youre feeding the ignition switch from??? It needs to be fed off the ammeters load side terminal. The ignition could still work if the switch were fed off the big battery cable at the switch provided its the battery not the starter side, but its loads wouldnt be running throught the ammeter that way.

Check where the ignition switch gets its input voltage??? It may be wired incorrectly !!!

It doesnt really matter where it gets the power from,if its wired correctly, the amp meter will show what it suppose to show when its is suppose to show it.I have a couple wired for power from the amp gauge and a couple from the starter switch, but on the battery side of it.

John, I certainly agree, it (ammeter) will read correct if its "wired correctly" but if the IGNITION SWITCH is wired/fed off the starter switch from the "battery side" as you claim, the ammeter WILL NOT INDICATE/REGISTER the current draw of the coil (around 4 amps). In order for the ammeter to indicate/register current it must flow through it, but if the ignition switch is served from the starter switches battery side (same as ammeters input supply terminal) its current IS NOT REGISTERED by the ammeter since its current does NOT flow through it. If the Ignition is wired off the starter switches battery side instead of the load side of the ammeter, with the tractor not running if you turned on the ignition the ammeter WOULD NOT REGISTER MINUS 4 AMPS as it should if it were wired correct. The ammeter is supposed to register the net current flow into (charging) or out of (discharging) the battery which is why the ammeters input supply side is wired ONLY to the battery/starter while the ammeters other load side feeds all loads (lights and ignition) PLUS connects to the gennys output via the Cutout Relay.

Hope this helps clarify things, great fun discussion, take care yall

Ok,I get what your saying, but of the 7 tractors I have that have an electrical system, all of them show a discharge when the switch is pulled out,no matter which way I have them wired.

If you have a distributor instead of a magneto and have your on/off switch wire on the starter switch, you need to move the wire to the other post on the starter switch.
