Was warm today so I decided to take down a 6ft x 10inch broken limb that was stuck high in a large maple tree before it fell on someone.

So I got out the Case 1030 and parked it in a safe looking place.

Then I nailed together two 8ft 2x2 to give me a 16ft reach.

I stood on the tire of the 1030 and with the pole I could just reach the limb and pushed one end off where it was jammed.

Now that limb should have fell straight down behind the tractor. But danged if my pole didnt catch on a twig and that limb got on that pole like a kid on a slide and came down straight at me.

I braced my arms up to prepare to block it when it wedged in another limb about 2ft from my head.

Sometimes we make it through the day in spite of ourselves.

Those branches are called widowmakers, and for good reason. I have a '50 cable that I use if I need to put tension on a tree. I'll add some sections of chain if it's tall or a second cable for a big tree.

A long time ago, before building our house on our property, I had to take down a GIANT oak tree near the road that was located where the driveway was going. The tree had to be 2-1/2 feet in diameter. It seemed to be leaning just slightly north (the right way), so I was sure it would fall that way. Just to make sure, I tied a large bull rope as high on the trunk as I could and secured it to another tree. Ha. Then I started cutting. And wouldn't you know, the bull rope got tighter, and tighter, and tighter, and...TIMBERRRR...the tree fell SOUTH, opposite of the way I wanted. Across the road it went, taking our my neighbor's yard gas light and brushing his house. Luckily, I knew a few guys on the township highway crew, so they came over with chainsaws and SAVED ME. How I thought that bull rope was ever going to make a difference amazes even me! Dumb. David

Purchased a property years ago. The property had a small shed/barn about 16 feet tall in very poor shape. You could push on the side of the shed and the top would wobble back and froth about 18 inches. Got my son to help push over the shed. We pushed and the shed wobbled. Pushed and pushed - shed wouldn't fall over. Got the sawsall and cut partially through all of the studs on the east side of the building - the direction I wanted the shed to fall. Great, got the son and we pushed on the west side of the shed thinking it would fall to the east. The shed fell over, south, right on top of the garage.

Neighbor cut a bent over apple tree near his house. It split at the cut and lifted him right up to the roof. not a mark on him. He had to climb down the tree (up) to get down.
