A friend of mine has a Farmall H. He went away for a week and when he returned some of his hired help drove the tractor and got it stuck in 2nd? gear. He said that they can move the shifter lever to all of the gears but it still wants to go forward when letting the clutch out. My ? is can the problem be fixed by taking the shifter out of the cover or do I have to take the top cover off. Also is this due to a bent shifter fork or is it just loose and the fork slipped off of the gear. Thanks guys, I never had this happen before but I guess it happened a few times on this particular tractor.

After all the years of use the shifter levers and the shift rails get worn. You can fix it by removing the lever from the top of the transmission and building up as others suggested. Oversize it, then grind it down just so it fits and shifts smooth. Temporary (very) solution is to shift slow, make deliberate front/back movement to make sure the shift rail hits the neutral position before moving the lever sideways. Until the shifter is removed and built up fast U shaped shifts are going to result in the transmission being stuck in a gear

Brad: Cowman is right and you must build that up so shift lever end is the shape of and completely fills the notch in one shift rail. I like to build these just a hair oversize and then grind until it shifts smooth. Looking at it straight on from bottom, it should be close to a perfect rectangle, very slightly rounded on the corners.

the lever slips out of the rail. you will need to remove the lever and use a screwdriver to line up the rails in nuteral. then you need to build up the end of the lever.
