I have a 56 300U that I converted to 12volt a few years back (with help from the good folks on this site). I put new brushes in the starter a few years back as well. A few weeks ago I was running the tractor on a slight incline while splitting wood and ran the fuel level down and got some junk in the carb. I could tell the tractor was not happy so I started for home. About 200 feet form the barn she died so I walked her home with the starter (shame on me). I was patient with this process however and made it back to the barn. A few days later I got some time so I cleaned out the junk from the carb and went to start her up....Apparently I had left the key on and battery was dead. Charged up the battery and went to fire her up again and nothing. Got out the meter and checked everything out all was well. I was racking my brain and finally just decided to tap on the starter. Got a little bit of noise from her but not much more. I pulled it off the tractor and put it straight to the battery and nothing. I opened her up and found I had totally worn down one of the brushes. My question for the experts is how come only one wore down so bad and not all of them? I know I put the screws to her walkin it home like I did but nothing I can think of tells me why it only wore down one brush. Thanks!

Thanks guys.I figued you would give me something that made sense.I really appreciate all of your expertise.I replaced the brushes but have not had time to put the starter back together so I"ll look carefully to see if I can determine any difference between that spring and the rest and let you know how it goes when I put it back onthe tractor. Thanks again!

Mark, I believe the starter is a series wound device, but regardless, the same current would try (subject to contact area and pressure) to flow through BOTH brushes to and through the armature windings, so Im thinkin I agree with Bob that one brush must have had greater pressure (brush hold down spring assemblies) or was perhaps burned or pitted more then the other and arcing (produces great heat) started happening (also a voltage drop occurred across the higher resistance brush) to melt and wear that one brush.

If thats NOT it heck if I know lol

I'm gonna guess a weak spring or stiff brush holder pivot on the brush that failed. That caused insufficient pressure to provide good contact between the brush and commutator and the brush then to burn.

Using the starter like that it's amazing it didn't burn itself out - testament to how robust those old Delco starters are I guess!

Agree with Bob, one brush is not making good contact, arcs when communtator rotates, and burns up. I think it would have had to be that way for a while, probably since you replaced the brushes. I don't think even treating it the way you did would be solely responsible for wearing one brush all the way down.
