The front tires on my 1066 have a lot of age on them and one was booted before I bought it. They are 10.00x16 and little concerned that they are unsafe on road in high gear and do not want blowout 8 miles from shop. I was wanting to put new 11.00x16s on it for a little more flotation and wanted to go with 4 rib as they look better. The thing is that right now there is approx 3/4 inch clearance between inner edge of tire and the little steel block welded on the outside top of the spindle tower. I know tire brands can vary but do you all think the 11.00 is that much wider that it could rub. Tire man is unsure!

Michael, I have a 73 966. It came with impliment tires on it. It was a very short while before I changed out to airplane tires. I am on my second set of 32x11.5x15. These tires are ....front tires on a Boeing 727. More than capable in doing the Ag work on a farm tractor. They really shine if you use a loader on your 1066. my original factory floatation rims worked just fine on my first set. On my second set, I up graded to HD rims with thicker centers than my OEM ones. They cost me $70 ea, the tires cost me about 70 too. There is still about 3/4 of an in cleaarence between the tire and the steel block wedge you spoke of.
My first set of tires went 10 yrs....Long enough, Don't you think.
Allan has a pic or two of my ol girl w/ her old first set of airlpane tires still on it. Maybe he will post it late for you to see.
I will NEVER go back to Ag tire on the front.
Hope this helps!
Later,
John A.

I would recommend you stick with the 10:00. I don't think the 11:00 was even an option on the F-1066 when new. Probably would rub. Also 3 rib was standard.

ya I thought of the stress load potentials. Maybe I should just stay with the 10.00.

I dunno,

Think I'd stay with that original size if it were mine.

Had a spindle snap in the field one time. They sure come down in a hurry. Kinda catch ya off guard too. :>)

An 11.00 is quite a bit bigger than a 10.00. Firestone has a real nice website for ag tires and You should research things there like section width and loaded radius on the 10.00 & 11.00. I really doubt reversing the wheel on the hub will gain You any clearance... If Your front wheels are anything like the 86 & 88-series had the bare OEM wheel won't even bolt on that way.

Here,

Maybe this will help from page 63 of the owner's manual. All IH wheels are swapable; up thru the 66 series anyway.

The 16" frt wheels, 10.00, 11.00 & even the 14Lx16.1's the wheels would only mount dished out, concave. The 15" 6-bolt wheels "COULD" be mounted either way since at least the stamped centers were welded into the wheels dished in, or convex.

Doc,

Was just reading that. Has he got the wrong wheels on that thing, then?

1066 up thru the 1466 should have come with the 11LX15 tires/wheels, right? Supposedly, they didn't start the 16 inchers until the 86 series (not counting the high-crops)?

Dunno, I've never owned an 86 series large frame.

IH did use a LOT of 9.5L & 11L x 15 tires/wheels during the 66-series but never on the 86 series. Yes, a few 886's & 986 snuck out with 9.5L's. Those were all 6-bolt wheels however. And the hubs & wheels had different back spacing and probably could be mounted either way, in or out. The 16" however could not. I personally like the 9.5L & 11L 15's.... depending on rear tire size the old girls either sit level or slightly nose Down!

Yep,

One side is close, the other sets out a little. If yours is setting at 3/4" now, it means that they are set in.

Be aware tho, Mike,

When they are set out like that, it puts more of a strain/load on the spindle. I always liked to keep 'em tucked in close.
