A neighbor of mine is gettng rid of everything in the yard, and I just happenned to find out just in time to buy the H for scrap value. I remember the thing driving by my house in the not so distant past..(3-4 years?) and i twas a bit of an oil smoker. It had a reeally bad homemade loader on it that scrap guy had already disposed of. Already looks 100 percent better, and the loader protected the sheet metal from being destroyed. No hydraulics or three point anymore tho. (Never had 3 pt, from what I can tell,)

Well you know it, someone didn't cap the exhaust and now it has set up.Any thoughts on the unsticking process? I am tempted to try and pop the clutch on the short drag home but I think I had better do a little soakdown with PB first..

I read a recent post that stated H's set up real hard and are hard to unstick? What's that all about?

It's my first large red tractor..(I have owned 2 cubs..)..Afer doing nothing but Fords, it's gonna be a little strange! (of course I do have a 454 for real tractor work, but that's a whole different league than these old beauties..

Update in reply to Truck, 03-28-2006 17:27:06
Well, I went to pump the tires up today to drag it home and discovered the air/calcium adapter in one tube had corroded away. Ordered a new one at NAPA and hope I can make it seal long enuf to get it home.

Stupid question.. Where the "H" is the dipstick for the engine in this thing? I found a petcock on the oil pan, it had nice black oil in it at that level, no water.

Good thing tho...the ring chains are still on it. They are worth what I paid for the tractor!I think I'll pop them off before it goes for the little drive up the street.

I promise I won't pop the clutch. Today I found out the muffler has been off most of the last three years, even tho it was on when I went to look at the tractor. I think it will be a soak it for the duration project. Wish I could find that turpentime I had found somewhere this summer..

THanks for all the info guys!

Yup, no dipstick, you use the 2 petcocks on the side of the oil pan, when I change oil I slowly add the last bit of oil until it comes out of the top one...

Don't try popping the clutch on the way home..... good way to break arod and or block.....get it home...remove the spark plugspour auto trans fluid in each cyl.....
do not replace spark plugs....

block the wheels and jack up one rear wheel...put tranny in 5th gear..... every time you come near the tractor rock the wheel back and forth,,,keep adding trans fluid in cyl..... Don

here's one for ya. take off the valve cover and take the plugs out. find the cylinder going down on power stroke(both valves closed) and rig up a fitting for your hydraulics on another tractor to go in place of a plug and give her he!!. might losen the rocker arms just in case they want to open up on the way down:) I promise it has worked before.

P.S. hyd fluid out the radiator means bad slieve.
lol

Hey PSU Kid -

I can tell by your IP address that you are posting from on campus here at the university.

I've worked here for 16 years and also farm out west of Texhoma...

Where are you from?

I'm from Claremore,OK been here for a few years working on an agronomy degree, I'm done next may maybe even early as Dec. My W9 is at Pop's hay lot in town. My WD9 is at Curts shop S of Guymon. Tractor pull in Ulysses April 8.

I guess it is possible to break something if your not careful, you have to know for sure which stroke the piston in. I perfer soaking in some type of solution, one guy told me he uses WATER. He said h20 makes rust and h20 breaks rust(above 32F).

That sounds like a way to brake all sorts of things. Like rods, sleeves, and mayve even a piston.

I would first pull the plugs and blow out the cylinders with air. That will remove loose rust and water in the cylinders. Then I would fill the cylinders with a50/50 mix of tranny fluid and turpentine and let it sit a week or so, make sure you put the plugs back in. I picked up an H a couple years ago the sat under and oak tree for 25 plus years and it was stuck and that mix got it loose. It had set there long enough that the top of the gas tank was rusted out. The thing run god now and all I did was that and worked on a couple stuck valves.

I would not pop the clutch. Soak it in some kind of penetrating oil, some use brake fluid or ATF. If it smoked before and now its stuck, I'd plan on a rebuild. Josh H

I would fill the engine up with as much light oil as you can get in, right to the top, then take some pb blaster and soak the pistons and valves really good and let her sit, you may end up having to take the head and pan off and pound out the pistons, but if it smoked that bad you might be better off putting a sleave kit in anyway.. Oh, and Don't pop the clutch on the road, something bad will most likely happen..

We just had our monthly meeting last night, and the guys were talking about stuck engines. An old mechanic that has passed away some years ago swore by automatic trans. oil. Pore some in the cylinders and let it sit for a couple weeks. If you can put a pipe wrench on the crank shaft in the front and give it a tug every couple days for the two week period. May take a little longer, but it is worth a try. Good Luck

Can't recommend trying to pull un-stick a stuck engine. I have a old 41 H that someone tried to pull to get it unstuck. The driveshaft and carrier bearing hanger were wiped out. I would try turning it with a crank, and if that doesn't work, pop the head off and see what you have in the cylinders. Just my opinion...ken
