Farmall A surges at high throttle

I have a farmall A that will surge when you get it up to about 3/4 throttle. Runs fine at low idle up to about 3/4 then the motor speeds up and slows down. How do I adjust the governor to remedy this problem?

The anti-surge spring in the bottom of the governor housing is most likely rusted out or stuck with sludge. Thst area has no oil circulation so just collects whatever comes by. The spring is available at your IH dealer at a minimal cost.
Adjusting the spring tighter (turned in) will give more resistance to surging.
There is an acorn nut plus a lock nut to loosen to adjust the tension.

Red Dave has it correct. There is a spring in there that you are adjusting the tension on when you move that screw. The spring may have gotten weak over the years and need replacing, or it could even be broken. Turning the screw in will put more tension on the spring han help the surge. If it gets too tight though, it may prevent the governor from allowing the engine to go to low idle.

There is a screw on the bottom of the governor that has a cap on it. take the cap off and turn the screw out (if I remember right) to reduce surging. If that doesn't work, try the other direction. Move it one turn at a time and try it, Keep count of your turns so you can go back to where you started if it doesn't work.

It's close to the fan, so watch your fingers! I'd adjust it with the engine stopped, then start it and try it out.
