I have a 544 row crop with a 4 cyl c-200 gas engine. Th exhaust manifold is cracked. Dealers list new manifold at 400 bucks (intake and exh together). Is it bad to run with a cracked exhaust manifold? Can they be fixed? I found a site on the internet that has aftermarket ones for $175? Anyone know any other sites that may sell them? 400 bucks is a lot for the manifold in my opinion.

The part number a CNH dealer gave me was 398071-R1. But, he wasn't sure if that was right. The numbers I keep seeing on the net are 406046R1(pic shown here). These manifolds fit the engine but the exhaust ports are located a little further back towards the rear of the tractor. I can get a new one of them for 120 bucks. Would the only thing I need to do is cut a new hole in the tractor hood?

Umm, never been to York county. My 544 is a wide front end. If you don"t have anything helpful to say then please don"t make meaningless replies.

Welcome to the club. I just went down that road myself with a 1971 544. First off, there are three styles of exhuast manifolds for the 544 gasser alone. From what the CNH guys tell me, the one that is the most prone to cracking is the style where the exhaust pipe exits vertically at the very front of the manifold.

They can be repaired, as I had done with mine, so I could have a good spare if the need did so arise. I took mine to a welding shop. I am not sure what it is they use to repair a cast piece, but they did do a decent job. It only set me back $42. It isn't the cleanest weld alive, but I'm not sure what options welder's have at their disposal when it comes to cast. I bet someone on the board here will know exactly what they use.

Good luck!

Billy

I will check on my CNH invoice tonight and see what the P/N was. Does your manifold have the exhaust tapping at the very front of the manifold or does it have the tapping centered (which would put it directly above the carb)?

It is a bit of sticker shock when you have to purchase one. I could see a couple hundred bucks for OEM, but when I was quoted $379 I almost launched my cookies.

I'll see what I can do for you, I hope I can still find that invoice with the p/n on it.

Here is a pic of the manifold. It has the exhaust port all the way to the right in the pic.

For whatever reason, I couldn't see your picture...but if the exhaust exit is to the right, it is the same one that I had...and had to purchase (sigh).

I'll see if I can dig that info up for ya. My manifold cracked between the first and second cylinder. That seems to be the main place for failure on that particular manifold.

Hey Jerry, that's the exact same place my manifold cracked...almost completely in two. It looks like yours isn't far behind mine.

I did look for the invoice to get you that p/n, but couldn't seem to find it. I'll see if I can get a hold of the CNH guys and still get it for you though.

Jerry,

That manifold is very repairable if done with
oxy/acetylene cast iron . I do many manifolds and other cast iron repair. Below is a link to some repair .

Jerry, that's a nasty looking crack. Don't think I'd try to fix it. Don't think it could be welded accurate enough to get all the bolt holes lined back up with the head, plus not getting it welded back perfect is going to stress it when you bolt it up, causing it to crack again as soon as it gets hot and expands.
