What is the best type of motor oil to use in an A? I have been using 10w30 in my A for 4 years now, I use it mainly in the summer to mow should I be using a heavier motor oil in it? I live in southern NJ and it does not get below the 20s very often in the winter.

I completely disagree with John below. You've been using detergent oil for 4 years now, and that tractor most likely had it in it before. Your sludge is gone. Going back to non-detergent would be a giant step backwards in my opinion.

Your tractor calls for #30 oil with 0.5% sulfated ash or less. Most #30 oils won't meet that, you need low ash.

Having said that, in my opinion, if you change oil regularily, you can continue to use what you are using with no ill effects. You aren't hardly working that old girl at all.

sure you can use 30 wt oil if you choose. But I will tell you I rebuilt/repaired a few of these with oil leaks and the seals feel like mush. I asked the owner what oil was in there and they told me they used 30 or 10w30. detergent oil WILL rot the seals over time - unless you have changed the seals or plan to - just be aware

You should be using a non detergent oil. The tractor was made back when they used leather oils seals. Using a detergent oil over time will soften the seals and a leak will start. I always use a 30ND oil in my H and A. They run great!!!!

I use Quaker State 10W 30 year round without problems. Just keep an eye on the oil pressure. Dave.
