I have used Case IH 30W Low Ash bulk oil for several years in my antique Farmalls and have had excellent luck. However, the price is getting so high that I was wondering what others use and have good results and is realistically priced.

Does anyone know which company packages the oils for Case IH?

If you are talking letter series through at least the 450, about any detergent 30W or 15W40 oil is ok, possible 10W30 in a very cold climate -- low ash wasn't invented when those tractors were built.

I use detergent 10W30 in my A, should I be using a thicker motor oil?

Depends on your climate. On those loose tolerance engines, I would run 15W40 year around. If very cold in the winter use 10W30. You can use 30W in the summer. In south Texas we used 30W all year. I am a little leery of 10W30 in the summer under any kind of a load -- but I have no proof of that. I don't use my tractors much and use 15W40.

Like everything else prices just keep going up and the old story is if ya want to play then ya got to pay. Now i know someone is going to say that well i have been using this here cheap 10 w 30 and it works for me ok well a working engine is not the same as driven your car or pickup down the road for a 12 pack and the low ash was designed for the working engine . Now if you could find a lower priced supplier that had the same spec. then well i do not see a problem . And to skimp a buck or two and end up eating and engine job myself i'll spend the extra buck.

I read the oil specifications for the upcoming 2007 Mack/Volvo low emmissions engines the other day. They Specify Mack/Volvo oil OR a long list of other oils that meet Mack/Volvo specs. Every major brand plus many of the smaller companys such as Warren have an oil that meets Mack/Volvo specs, there were al least 50 labels listed. If these companys can meet the specs for the latest high tech engines they should have oil good enough for low tech 60 year old tractor.
