Sounds more to me like your flooding. The impulse does trip ahead of TDC.Unless the inners were messed with, the mag can only go on two ways, and one aint right,so if it runs any, that has to be the right way.The mag wouldnt have anything to do with you blowing raw fuel out the muffler.Maybe a stuck valve?

Thanks for the offer but, i think i got it!!
What i did was, left the mag bolted to the housing and pulled the mag and drive gear housing in one unit. I set #1 to TDC rolled the rotor too the #1 plug term. reinstalled the thing, rolled mag till i heard the SNAP.
pluged in the #1 plug wire and started her up, then connected the rest of the plug wires."Sounded
like a Beast"
then i proceeded to brush hog a 3 acer field in 4th gear with no problem other than some white smoke. But when i got this thing it was only running on one cyl; and for no telling how many years, so i figure there is some build up in the other three that it is burning off.

After you check all the easy things mentioned below, if you still have a problem check the cam gear. I had a problem on my smta when I first got it, would run but not like it should, also did not start good. Realized it was blowing air out the intake. Found cam gear loose and a chipped cam end.

You should check the cap for any tiny cracks if there's any burnt terminals in that cap I would change it and the rotor. Hal

It could be your plugs, plug wires, should be copper wires and check valve lash. Set them at .020" cold. If it still misses you should check the compression. Could need a valve job.

If the impulse "clicks" pretty close to #1 TDC, you've got the timing darn close.

When the engine starts, and the impulse "kicks out", the advance will jump to full running timing all at once.

Assuming you have the correct mag (impulse "lag angle" does vary), it is working properly, and firing at close to TDC at cranking, your timing is close enough so that it is NOT the cause of the problems you are having.

Sounds to me like spark plug wires scrambled around, or a valve problem. (Sticky ar burned valve(s).)
